Taking McNally on loan with an option to buy would be better

I know he wasn't great at Stoke (who was?) but he was excellent for us. I'd take him back in a heartbeat

I’d have McNally and Doyle back. CB area complete then.

Only question mark for me with McNally is that he shone here in a back three. We’ve moved away from three at the back now and I’m not sure how he’d look in a back two with one of Kitching or Thomas.

So would I mate, but we haven't got £15million to piss up the wall on centre halves.
Paddy Mcnair on a free is more realistic.
Or Jonathon Panzo when his contract expires at the end of the month.

genuinely curious, do you only rate players you've never seen play before from abroad?

We were bad defensively before McNally, we were good defensively during McNally. That's enough to suggest he was... alright.

McNally played in a back 5 with a low defensive line and 2/3 defensive midfielders infront of him. We ask a lot more of our centre backs this year, he wouldn’t be as good as Thomas in that right centre back spot.

McNally's disappointing season at Stoke shows how much Robins & Adi get from their players, with smart tactics and first class training. I would expect him to stay at Burnley though. Certainly wouldn't put him above Thomas and Kitching in the pecking order. Despite the latter's loss of form at the end of the season

I know what you mean, but for a free transfer he'd fill a spot on the bench, he's still quite young and if he improves we might even see a profit after a year or two.

I’d have Panzo back - he’s still a development but there’s deffo a decent player in him

That's not quite true. We'd kept 12 clean sheets that season before he joined. We fell away a bit when Fadz got injured.

McNally was good for us but I'm not sure his passing is good enough, particularly if he's playing in a 4.

Poster on X claims we are after Jordan James.

If number of followers is an indicator of credibility, he’s not credible.

Firstly just to say McNally isn’t an awful pick, I’m not completely against it, I just want us to be looking forwards rather than going for the nostalgia picks all the time. I think McNally is alright but is he game-changing? Not particularly?

There’s literally soooo much talent out there, I want us to be picking the Van Ewijk’s of the world, someone that’s probably doubled his value already, rather than retreating back to McNally. He’s not bad, he’s just not amazing. I want us to be bigger and bolder, we’ve got to smash the opposition if we want promotion.

I like you BSB, forward thinking (unlike @procdoc, nibble nibble - although you do have sound reasoning, I think we just see things differently.)

McNally started to come good near the end for Stoke after looking poor in an under performing team. Stoke's new manager looked to have turned them around and I think they will do better next season. Will Burnley want to keep McNally? It will be interesting to see if Stoke bid for him, although they have just signed a new centre half. I would be happy if we signed him at the right price.

My main concern with McNally (other than I think we should be aiming a little higher) is that he was fine in a back 3 where he had 2 other CB’s helping him out but in a back 2 I’m not sure if he’d be any better than Kitching or Thomas?

I don’t think he can fill Bidwell’s role at LB so really he’d just be a backup CB, or a sidewards move for Kitching at best. I just think our money is better spent on a proper upgrade for Kitching if we go down that route, rather than someone that’s of a similar-ish ability.

One position I always prefer British is CB tbh. Think some of the dodgy foreign clowns we've had play there over the years have scarred me for life.

True, nothing wrong with a proper British CB, just want one that’s real quality and has a little bit of pace about them, we’ve had a lot of slow pokes in the past. I wouldn’t discount a Dutch CB though?

Panzo, to trot out a cliche, had all the attributes. Tall, strong, quick and was good with the ball at his feet. He'd be an excellent signing on a free.

John Stones is the only British centre half in the top 3 clubs in the UK. Eric Deir is the only British centre half playing for a top non British side in the world …

Oh this information has changed my mind completely. I hope Ruben Dias fancies a move to the CBS. Maybe as a sweetener we can send Will King to his house 3 times a week to clean shave his entire body.

The thought of him and Da Silva defending our left hand side is frightening. Both are positionally naive and allow players to run in behind them to receive the ball. Panzo's defensive heading skills were appalling!

He is good coming out with the ball. I think he would be better converted to a LWB - but in the LCB position too much work is required; free or not.

To be fair, we’re probably not looking in the bracket of world’s best centre half.
