Maybe I wasn't clear enough that my second statement was not predominantly related to McCallum, notwithstanding that I am disappointed he isn't joining.

My doubts are based on:

1. Going from losing the play offs on penalties last season to 9 points off the play offs
2. One point from the last five games, including getting hammered by a poor Birmingham team
3. These things happening because of lack of squad depth,, despite Robins seeming to say this would happen in January if we didn’t add players
4. A perception that transfers are focused on potential resale values rather than developing a balanced team, which includes experience, not just potential
5. An apparent aversion to loans, which is the most realistic way that we can add top quality to the team.
The squad overall is in a better place now than it was compared to the end of last season though. I do agree though that King should leave the football side to Robins rather than blocking loans and commenting on squad depth, which he doesn’t know a lot about.

We’re still in the same phase as when SISU came in and any sort of questioning of King is shot down.

So if we get a >£15 million offer from a PL team early in the window, or after Vik/Gus have moved on, then we’re rejecting it no matter what?

Tbh, as with all our players, we'd be stupid not to snap their hands off for that kind of money.

We wouldn't need to accept it, thats not saying we wont

The acid test this Summer for Doug if Vik doesnt move early

We've done our part. Record ST Sales again more than likely, record merch sales over the last 12 months, an FA Cup semi sell out. Interesting to see how the window pans out

There will always be a number we accept regardless, that’s the food chain I guess.

We are just in such a stronger position to play hard ball. Coupled with fact Sheaf doesn’t not seem type to kick up fuss.

Thought there would have been more noise around COh destination - wonder if those numbers he wanted have gone down! (similar to Browne situation!)

From what saddlebrains is saying, sounds like we need players to move before we start spending. Granted, his info is second hand at best.

Depends on the players tho. Difference between needing a massive sale to fund 4 players or losing a few out of contract to fund a browne type free signing

I don't believe that summer spend is based on outgoings.

I think Doug is sensible on wage structure etc and not paying over the odds but I reckon we'll spend. Not as much as last summer but I don't think if Vik doesn't move, we won't spend.

I don’t buy this particular insider snippet.

we bid £8m-£9m for the player that went to Benfica in Jan. Yes we have bought EMC but there will be some left for transfers in my view.

Clearly we will and can do more if the Vik money comes in.

If we get a suitable bid from a Prem team then Ben will be off and also he deserves it.

Ben isn’t going to move to another Champ club. We’re going for promotion next year and he knows that. Luton in my opinion won’t be auto contenders and will lose players. Some proved they can mix it in the Prem. Even with new players they will have a bit of a rebuild.

The thing with Sheaf is that, yes we do have a relatively strong hand now but it’s a fleeting moment. By the end of the current window it’s a lot weaker. There’s still the January 2025 window but usually there’s fewer potential buyers. After that window closes, the clock really is ticking.

As for valuations, if the player isn’t agitating for a move, we can hold out for a nice fee of over £15m plus add ons. But unless he scores a boatload of goals in the autumn, those figures are extremely unlikey after this summer when he will be depreciating fast as his contract runs down.

Really hope he stays and we get promoted with him. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the club took the money this summer. And I wouldn’t die of shock if it was less than £15m.

Doug has frozen season ticket prices, and doubled down on his “I’m ambitious and we are going to give it a proper go “ message.

neither suggests we have run out of transfer funds ….

What do you mean exactly when you refer to this ‘acid test?’

The club is increasing its spending on infrastructure and is a loss making enterprise, we need to be realistic on what we can spend. Last season was a real treat because of the windfall we had from Hamer and Vik.

Naturally, we’re still reliant on bringing in transfer revenue to fund future transfers. A potentially £8-12m for sell on fees is equivalent to selling a star player in previous years.

As for Sheaf, he’s an our best player and at the peak of his value. It would pain me if we sold him but if it meant we got to spend 70-90% of the fee, I would accept that as the cost of doing business.

You see the attitude of ‘Doug needs to put his hand in his pocket’ in relation to transfers. Which, if you’re losing £4-7m (or more) a season, that’s the equivalent of a record signing (Haji Wright) just to keep the lights on.

As you say, us fans are doing our bit and the clubs messaging is optimistic too and no scaling back/tempering expectations yet.

It's naive to think Doug puts in a lump of cash in Robins hand to buy a player. It does not work like that.
He will give a set of guarantees to the bank, a plan of showing asset increases, his liquidity etc and the bank will agree a percentage of funding. So increases in ticket sales, infrastructure improvements, his credit worthyness all play a part.
So for example, a player cost 5m and Doug funds 30% the rest is on bank terms, and must show that it's sustainably affordable. As we increase our overdraft the interest payable increases, so we have to set our parameters.
If there is a windfall from Vic or O'Hare then that goes in part back to the upfront funding of the overdraft limits, and the interest is again reduced. What Doug has to be good for is that 20% or 30% which is why Man City have Saudi backers, all good for 100%!!
Doug isn't going to risk his fortune anymore than you or I would, but he brings financial clout we have not had for many a year.

I hope we have built a summer recruiting plan around our structure not on the relience of other teams selling Vik and Gus. Or even worse one of best players to fund any movement. We still have multiple players at the bottom of our squad that we can move on and reinvest the wages. That along with increases in other revenues we should be already down the line in potential signings without waiting on others.

Im sure we will have a fee i mind for the likes of Sheaf, Simms, Wright and Milan would trigger a response. And if its in the 15 to 20 mill mark most fans would understand the club accepting that money. But that again is something i hope we are not relying on. Lets see what the next few weeks bring but as of now i have not been disappointed with the recruiting policy under King.

Doesn’t really make sense.

1. Sheaf has to want to leave.
2. Sheaf decides which club he might want to join. He decides that, not you, so it might be Luton. Or Little Piddle on the Wold FC.
3. The buying club then has to meet Covs asking price which sounds as if it might be £10-12 million.
4. If Vik hasn’t moved, then City don’t get any extra money.
5. Fans need to stop spending the Gyokeres money in advance.
6. If Gyokeres is sold in a part exchange deal, then we don’t get any money

Agree with that.

Like it or not, now is the right time to sell Sheaf.

We don’t know what’s happening but if Sheaf has told the club he wants to go or, at least, won’t sign a new contract, then absolutely the clock is ticking.

We can’t afford for him to wind his contract now, so it’s £12 million now. £8 million in January. Free in 2 years.

Sheaf holds all the cards. So let’s hope he will sign a new deal
