Good stats and fan review from Bristol. If we do can we please do it now so he has two weeks in the team

He's not coming to improve the team long term. If he's as good as Eccles it's all we need for a short term fix. It will also show the doubters that we need that extra man

James or Sam Clucas would stiffen the midfield, both tougher than Eccles and Torp

Said a few days back on the free agent thread he's worth a one year deal... just what we need is Matty.

Well, we’re desperately light. At least James would be an upgrade on Kelly from last season.

A short term contract for James or Armstrong would be a decent option. Experience and leadership alone could do this team a world of good. Providing more value to the team collectively rather than individual ability.

Besides, there’s no alternative to free agents until Jan now.

For me it allows Eccles to play the 8 role he’s better suited for, it’ll be Sheaf or James on the pitch as a six.

This is it hopefully allows the 4-3-3 to work correctly by allowing Eccles and Jack to play as 8s with Matty or Shesf playing a 6

I would prefer we played with a 6 and two 8s rather than a 6, 8 and 10. I think it would stop us being outnumbered in midfield as Rudoni is often too far up where he should be closer to Eccles and Torp.

We need Simms to be coming a little deeper for the ball with his back to goal too as it pulls defenders out and creates space for the wide attackers to exploit.

James was class for us and he would add much needed know how to a young squad. I’d definitely sign him up on a one year deal

Billing + cash in for Simms in Jan but a RB with the cash. Squad becomes:

Dovin/Wilson
MvE/RB
Thomas/Lats
Binks/Kitching
Bidwell/Dasilva
Sheaf/James
Rudoni/Torp
Billing/Eccles
Saka/Rapha
BTA/Bassette
Wright/EMC

Looks much more balanced, might even have spare cash for a LB or CB upgrade.

Considering? Get him in now. Enough faffing around trying to get more warm bodies for the hole that is our midfield, we've let Palmer, O'Hare and Hamer go and only brought in Rudoni in.

I think it would free up the wide forwards as well to get closer to Simms and have less defensive burden. I don’t rate Rudoni as a ten either, he looks like an 8 to me.

My point is, he's an aging midfielder who I'm not sure is an upgrade on what we've got.

He's definitely better than Kelly but does James start ahead of Eccles even without Sheaf?

Think we'd at least need to be in a reasonable position in the league for Billing to even possibly consider it... lets hope thats the case by Jan.

In the six position yes. But Eccles starts ahead of Torp in the 8 for me. It’s like Fadz in the playoff year, having him there should get the best out of the younger players around him.

For me he does, because he offers something different.
He's much more comfortable playing in a deeper role and shielding the defence compared to Eccles. That's not saying Eccles can't do it, but we all know he's better off further up the pitch.

We need stability in midfield which he will bring. He's calm, collected and more importantly will be commanding.

Not quite as simple as that. Even on a 'free' this is a very risky deal. He's likely to want a high wage & some security so a 1 year deal may not be appealing. Whilst he played a good amount last season, he has also struggled with injuries in his career, including missing the end of last season with a hernia problem that required surgery.

He's a very good player but, as others have said, this does look a bit desperate.

I get the point, however Sheaf is likely to miss another 10-15 games in the season going off previous seasons. I think without someone like this in, we will struggle to even pick up a point a game in those games.

Matty James is exactly what we need. Yes can step in for Sheaf but also would be great next to him in the middle and is a leader.

Just get it done

It looks desperate because we are desperate.

Wages and length of contract are obviously fair questions. But I genuinely feel just having a leader around would be valuable ATM even if he’s sat with his leg in a cast. Look at Fadz at Blackburn at the weekend.
