Good enough for what?

A top 10 finish with a chance at the playoffs - certainly, but it could have been much better. The imbalance is frustrating, most of our forwards would walk into any of our rivals first 11 yet only 1 of our midfielders would, and yet despite having 3 windows since the PO final we have failed in that task.

As I've said before, this season is (in my opinion) our best shot at promotion in DKs 5 year plan. Looking back it may have been better to sell Sheaf early this summer and use those funds to strengthen midfield, knowing that next summer we will still need to sort out CM and more than likely need to replace at least a couple of MVE, Wright, Simms and the whole process starts again.

We will make play offs.

We made play offs before with essentially two stand out players. We have more game winners in the team now, perhaps not individually as good, but game changers.

I’m pissed off too we haven’t got a CM in for the record, but it’s not the end of the season at all.

Allen and Eccles have played in a play off final. They've been part of a squad that finishes top half.
They get a lot of stick but they are established Championship players.
But clearly they've needed quality around them to achieve that.

I'm not sure Torp possesses that quality. He was very poor last week. How quickly he gets up to speed, or otherwise, will be a fairly big factor in how our season pans out I feel.

CVD usually agree with you and appreciate the optimism after the last 48 hours of collective suicide by the usuals. Just don’t see Allen as strong enough in this league - he was pulled at half time vs. Luton from memory as we were completely over run in midfield at the start of that match.

Couldn't agree more. We have spent a lot of money for a club still rebuilding. That is finite I'm sure we had hoped for more windfalls to bring in more players but they didn't happen. Put simply we spent what we could afford.

I know I will be in the minority but Matty James on a years contract would be fine with me, 33 years old admittedly but provides that experienced Championship cover Kelly did and is that extra body to compete with and cover for a thin group in Midfield. I guess Lati of course can play there if he doesn't start at CH and maybe that is their plan.

Couldn’t agree more. Of course we’ll “be fine” but that’s not the point. We’re obviously not going to be struggling at the arse end of the table but it’s a massive missed opportunity to strengthen and I think that’ll be the difference between top six and top half.

Think we’ll miss out and finish 8-10th. That’s not bedwetting, that’s just realism. Still not a bad season but not where we should be given the amount we’ve spent over the last 18 months.

Agree 100% - I’m a little disappointed so let’s hope we don’t fuck our season up with injuries to midfield.

We’ve messed up especially knowing Sheaf is out again (if it’s the rumoured 6 weeks).

We will pay for it this side of Xmas because the midfield will undoubtedly pick up more injuries.

So... Dream Big, Aim High, Play Up?
We have 6 midfielders if you include Saka, the best of which is made of glass and another of which is not worthy of a starting place (the consensus seems to say)
We went into deadline day needing 2 and came out needing 3.
For me this is such poor management and may well cost us any chance of success this season.
Signing none would have been bad enough but allowing a midfielder to leave when we are desperately light in that area is criminal and makes a mockery of Dream Big, Aim High, Play Up.
I can't help feeling very let down.

Apparently so.Although I think we went into deadline day needing 3 and now need 4.

As we are generally short in stature, I do wonder if we are looking at player height in signings now, which does reduce the players available who meet all the criteria we require.

Stamenic was 6'2" Billing was mentioned he is 6'6". Oliver Sonne 6'

I can't, no. They're targets that will be carried to the next window. One came very close, wage structure proving difficult, I believe it fell through quite late on. I didn't know anything about the RB we had a bid rejected for. Also there was a loanee who picked up an injury and remained with parent club. Seems things just weren't falling into place for us.
From what I've heard today, we should be thankful we are now in a position to turn down bids, as there were 3 rejected. In past years we'd have sold last minute and not had chance to bring anyone else in, so I'm grateful.
Today could've been a worse atmosphere than what it already was. As disappointed as I am we didn't strengthen the glaringly obvious, I know it wasn't through lack of effort.
I know people are upset Palmer left without replacement, I thought for sure they'd have it sorted if he was departing, but after today I know there was no coming back into the team for him.
Sheaf back in training next week.

I wish I could say more, but I respect the club want to move quietly. If people knew the type of players we are going for, it would probably change a lot of views on the matter. We're almost 2 years into a 5 year plan (probably a provocative statement today), it's going to take time to get the right players in the right positions. Replacing one by one is tedious, but that's FFP and wage structure for you, I don't want us to return to the days when we were all selling, no reinvesting. It's just perspective. I get the frustration, but I see people on here who are nowhere to be seen when the team are doing well, then whipping up the negativity at the first opportunity. That's not general fan frustration, it's doom mongering. Looking at it, I don't think any of the teams touted for the top, have really had the best starts possible, look at Luton. I still think the Championship is wide open this season. Strange results everywhere in the first few weeks.

Great post Jimmy. It’s what most sort of thought was happening. I’d much rather build with solid foundations than spaff money on fillers. There does seem to be a certain tension though in terms of the type of players we are now after versus a fairly rigid wage structure. Do you think there is any appetite to operate outside of it?

Agreed, we don't want players on long contracts who are not necessarily what we were looking for, having to make them fit just because we needed to fill a gap. I did ask the question of whether we may look at any free agents, no definitive answer but not scoffed at. I think it's more a case of players / agents wage demands than us being reluctant to operate slightly outside of it. The fee can be agreed, but the wages are often a stumbling block.

On the contrary, what he’s written, in a much more humble way than a certain other ITK would, is very fair. However the midfield recruitment notwithstanding, these players look lost for long spells during games which is really concerning.

He wasn’t happy, it sounded like agents maybe scuppered a deal or two. He also mentioned palmer and his agent agitating for move and his performance against Oxford suggested he was tapped up before game.

How many other multi-millio pound industries can you fail to complete an important job (recruting a centre mid in our case) and just shrug your shoulders and say, well, we tried? The pressure is massively on this season and if we fail to reach our goals then serious questions need to be asked of the recruitment decisions this summer.

There is also a case of the perfect being the enemy of the good. Case in point passing up Browne in pursuit of Stamenic and getting neither.
