We never looked like scoring. Maybe losing the game was a good thing because it highlights our problems to Doug and MR. Still got around 20 days to address it in this window.

Agreed.

Btw: I think you've taken my post about Thomas a bit personally. I didn't even notice who the post was by, just picked a random one because there seemed to be a theme emerging.

One of Robins few weaknesses is his inability to throw the bus at it with minutes remaining when losing …. Take a centre half off or take bidwell off a push another attacker through the middle …. Ugly, old skool but sometimes we need to mix it up and be less predictable

Given our record of scoring late goals it's hardly a weakness

I think people panicking a bit and looking into things too much

These players will continue to gain experience and some will become leaders in time. Don't have to buy a seasoned player although I wouldn't be against it either

We do need a midfielder in though as Allen isn't of the quality required for auto promotion contending team week in week out.

I like Thomas alot which is why it's so silly @Samo accused me of having a boo boy! But his passing was poor yday. That said do we really want a seasoned pro I go de trail Thomas and binks development? I'm not so sure

Fine margins in this game. Has binks scored that header or even if it remained scoreless we would be here talking about a clean sheet and away point whilst playing poorly. Mark of champions etc

I think we will be okay personally. Just need that midfielder in for sure and hopefully a RB back up

Yes it one game. We never got going and we know we can play better than that and can beat better teams than Stoke. We have shown that in pre season.

I’m obviously not Eccles’ biggest fan but a midfield of those three mentioned would be a lot better than yesterday’s lot. I still think we really need another midfielder to boss the middle of the park. The fact we had nearly £5m lined up for Stamenic gives me hope we’ll get that quality, confident baller we need.

I believe our coaches last year identified midfield as our strongest area.

Genuinely can’t believe someone hasn’t taken a punt on Hamer at such a low cost especially as he is now a proven prem midfielder. He genuinely carried that team at times last season.

I’m shocked nobody has made a move for him. Easily mid-lower Prem teams he could play for. Would be great abroad as well.

If anything like last summer maybe he will be gone on the last day of the window when clubs will start bartering with SU and his head will be turned.

I agree we can play better than that and frankly we have to. We beat loads of teams better than Stoke last year.
Pre-season performances time and time again prove to be a meaningless indication of the real thing. Stoke were rubbish in pre-season and played us off the park in the first half. There is a world of difference between being allowed to play expansive football and encountering most Championship teams that niggle, shirt pull, get tight on attackers and commit professional fouls.
The year we were promoted to the top division under Jimmy Hill, we had a terrible pre-season and likewise the year we won the FA Cup.
The early games are for fitness and trying out formations. The league matches are the real deal and you have to fight for the right to play or teams will steam roller you.

There is a difference between replacing Hamer with Hamer #2 and replacing Hamer. We replaced O'Hare with Rudoni and irrespective of who you think is better he plays a similar position/style and most importantly - is a starter.

When Hamer left we lost one of our first 11 and replaced him with no one. Torp has been more of a bit part player and we have since lost Kelly who we were forced to play 16x last season some of those whilst Torp was at the club. Regardless of what happened yesterday we look really short in midfield every time Sheaf gets injured.

I'm assuming there was something wrong with Eccles yesterday (he looked off it when he came on). It is pretty rare they will both be injured at the same time but in a team that likes to play 2 defensive midfielders we have a total of 2 defensive midfielders and we rely on Eccles too much. He looked burnt out at points last season, he really puts in the miles and you'd look at the subs bench in the last 10 and think - 'there is no one there that can give him a rest.'

If we are starting with Allen and Torp, and then bringing on Palmer to replace one of them. We are going nowhere.

Robins said that he knew Hamer wanted off on the coach back from the playoff final. We are getting towards the end of the third full window since we knew he was leaving and the gap still hasn't been filled.

That's just not good enough and if we are serious about going up Allen and Eccles aren't going to cut it.

Doug may have the "5 year plan" but for me this is THE year to go for it. If we fall short this year we will be looking at another rebuild next year as we will likely be moving on a few of Wright, MVE, Sheaf, Simms etc. If we don't do it this our next best chance will be the year after next, or the one after that.

This is such a massive year so it's going to be a disappointment if we have spent so much money in other positions but are still patching up the midfield with Allen.

Lot in there I agree with, I'm fine with Eccles if he has the right man along side him. There will be times in a season you have to patch and Allen may still play a valuable role at some point. But playing the first game of the season without a single recognised DM?? Nuts.

Some good points.

We haven’t replaced Kelly who was experienced and a leader.

And we defo haven’t replaced Hamer as a midfield dynamo.

We haven’t replaced Fadz as a leader and experienced CB.

These are the 3 positions we need to do something about before the window shuts.

Agreed. Some fans say it’s old-hat and too much of a cliche to talk about Hamer but it’s clear to me we’ve been lacking in midfield since he left. We need someone with his stamina, intelligence and ability, and on top of that we still need to sign another defensive midfield player for when Sheaf’s injured/rested. Still a fair way to go until it’s been a good window imo.

I think frustratingly we could have used the free market better to replace Fadz and Kelly. Alan Browne was a real miss and would have filled the Kelly void.

Anyway, the window isn’t shut yet, so let’s not judge just yet…
