Saw that yesterday, that's an interesting one as a few Liverpool fans think they haven't been the same since Firmino left .
Vik plays a similar role and is arguably a better player

Sporting might take a lower fee than the release clause but what we’re seeing is a potential bidding war anyway. I think this ends up in the £60-70m bracket.

I agree. I think 100m euros or 85m quid is a stretch. But if you got 70m then happy days.
From sportings point of view. They signed a player for 20m and can sell him for 70m after 12 months. 50m profit and a guy who scored a bag of goals for you. He will never be worth more than now.

For a long time i thought Tavares would come to nothing, but as an option on the right when others need resting i actually think he's alright. I said at the back end of last season as he was starting to look better that if Robins can turn him into anything close to resembling a Championship player and save us a few quid in the process then its another masterstroke. Well... I'm not saying i'm completely sold still but you wouldn't put it past us would you?
I'm not even advocating him playing all that often, we have many options across those positions now, but 10-15 mins running at a tired fullback? Reckon he's ok.

I’d say Kitching and Thomas are good enough as first up options. Binks and Lati are useful but slightly behind the first two. It’s about priorities. We haven’t got endless cash. I wouldn’t be looking to spend a lot on another CH. We are weaker elsewhere.

Binks clear of Kitching for me. Kitching was very underwhelming last season imo.

I don’t think they are particularly similar .

Vik at his best running at the last defender and on the turn when out wide ….. Firminio was at his best linking the play and feeding balls through to their wide players

Tav is deffo starting to show good confidence on the ball. he wants it, he's willing to take people on and last night he even out muscled someone.

It wasn’t, it was just an up and down season. Started off really well. One sending off that was pathetic from the officials, one which was stupid from Kitching. Own goals I don’t really care about, they happen. His form dropped off from about February/March. Personally, think his confidence took a dent. Didn’t help that the team as a whole looked crap in the league for the last 6-7 games. Hopefully he uses last season a lesson, but more experience and him and Binks push each other.

Agreed, I really find it weird how some fans are so quick to write off players after a bit of bad form yet completly gloss over the good work earlier in the season. Kitching was one of our better players for a few months before that ridiculous decision to send him off against Sheffield Wednesday.

I don’t know if it’s just a sign of the times (that sounds really old!), but it seems now that some players are only judged on their last game.

That and the fact he cost a lot probably.

People were praising his grit and loving the fact he was steaming in to stick up for players, the type of energy we lacked since Michael Doyle left. I think hes a good player to have in the squad and can kick on

It’s that and the cost which people seem to hold against him (not really his fault). I still think he could/should come good. Takes no shit, good on the ball and if he cuts out some of the silly stuff a good leader

I'm really skeptical at the figures that went around. I bet the fee was structured much like the others we have made recently

I want Kitching to do well and I think he will. I think what Binks has on him is that extra bit of agility which is something which separates a top level CB from the rest.

Binks is quicker, more graceful, and a better passer (although they are both good distributors). Kitching is more of a 'Defender'. Gets stuck in more and is stronger. Will be a real battle between those two, both excellent players in my view.

I think you put it very well

As to Tavares, I think he is worth keeping (as opposed to sending out on loan) as a squad player. We mustn’t forget that his injuries have held him back. It’s almost certainly a make or break season for him but he shows promise.

This season's transfers in are really looking good so far.
Some of last year's aren't aging so well- Collins, Kitch, jds, Ayari, Lati (maybe).
TBF some are ok squad players. Depends on their wages.

Kitching is fine , when we were playing well last season he was arguably our best defender . DaSilva has looked better in preseason and looks to have slimmed down a lot so I'll give him and Lati a clean slate .
And Collins for all his end of season woes is still a way better keeper than Wilson

Don’t get the negativity for Kitching. He and Thomas looked solid for a good chunk of last year (Kichings first at this level). He’ll turn out to be a fantastic investment.

I think there is always going to be negativity surrounding a player when they get sent off 3 times in one season.

I don't think Collins, jds or Lati are starting 11 players. Kitch we'll see. If they were bought to be first team players on high wages then that hasn't worked out.
But they are ok squad players.

Collins won't start over Dovin any time soon but the other two have looked ok so far in preseason

Personally, I disagree. Had a few good games at the start but was woeful since. My own opinion, but was never convinced by him. I feel much more assured when Binks plays.

I was happily wrong about Simms (as most were) so would be happy to be wrong on Kitching too, but don’t see him as a top end championship CB.

Apparently, we've signed Thomas-Asante and Boateng was key to convincing him.

I don't think Collins or Lati were brought in as starters and I don't like that they are judged by that mark. Both were fine acquisitions for back up roles. I think Robins did see Dasilva as first choice left back so that hasn't really worked out yet but there is still time and I'm 'one of those' who really rates Bidwell so personally I'm not concerned.

Kitching - like others here I was fine with him for the bulk of last season and am happy to overlook the iffy patch at the end of the season... which let's be honest wasn't just him. I do fear for him a bit that he might lose his place to Binks which might leave him looking a flop but generally speaking the recruitment last season was great. The big buys Simms and Wright have performed and MvE and Sakamoto look excellent business.
