A proper replacement for Kelly, I feel it's what we were missing last year and one of the reasons (along with the keeper) that we shipped so many goals.

I think the issue is that experienced players have little to no sell on value, and want too much in wages. That doesn't fit into Doug's game plan.

Hence that's the reason MR is wanting the current players to step up and become leaders and to replace the character that was shown by Fadz, Kelly, and Godden etc.

That's how I read it anyway.

Because we have lost Kelly.
Most fans wont have had Kelly in their best 11, but he played a lot of games at the end of the last 2 seasons when others were injured or spent. Teams that finish at the top dont have their players constantly playing 90 minutes Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday.

He's putting the responsibility on the likes of Bidwell, Sheaf , Wright and others to step into the holes left in the squad as regards experience and leadership.

Just watching yesterday's video it looks like the squad is coming together as a group nicely

If that's true then it's a silly approach in my view. Experience is essential.

I'm surprised this is news to people. Can't put my finger on it right now but Robins was quite clear early last season that his role in transfers was quite limited. I found it a little worrying then; probably best not to over think it now.

The days of managers signing players are long gone . Look at the players Brighton sign for example , do you really think their manager travels to watch South American football and scout players . It's all data driven these days

Rudoni has experience at this level AND potentially the ability to step up if we get promoted and/or a sell on fee.

Binks is the same.

EMC lacks championship experience but excelled last season in league 1.

Raphael lacks any experience but has bags of potential and is hungry to prove himself.

Contrast the above with bringing in experienced players who may now be injury prone, and are just looking for a pay day.

Remember, we are looking to develop and improve players, that's our M.O.

We want more players like Gyokeres and less players like Martin Waghorn

Yep it’s not the case we’ve lost Ohare and added rudoni on last seasons squad

We’ve added emc and raphael and binks updated to permanent

I can see you point, but if we want to push for autos and not just the playoffs, it's a area I think really needs strengthening. Having proper cover for the back for us important.

His transfer announcement was fairly low profile but he's very involved in a lot of these videos they are putting out, so yeh i reckon we've pulled another rabbit out the hat.

Think worst case we could go with what we’ve got. I’d hope we see Dovin in, and a few loans to pad out the quality though.

Loan or freebies feels enough for all positions except GK as the first option there doesn't look good enough. CB, DM and striker much less of a priority.

We need to go for it this season otherwise it will be a rebuild next season again because Simms, Wright, Sheaf will all be gone, happy with what we have done so far but need more players in, beginning to wonder about our Doug, no good going for playoff's or a cup run, concentrate on auto's , a tall order i know but its our only chance

Can we leave the worrying and panicking over doug until the end of the window? What did you do before the Internet?

As it stands this is the best squad we have had since 2001. I'd even be tempted to say it's better than that and would give the 99/00 team a run for it's money.

There is work to do but the stamenic chasing shows they are aware of that and there is money to spend on the right targets.

As it stands we have a good enough team for a shot at the playoffs, 3, 4 in and we are looking auto contenders.

Right, now can I start panicking??

If it’s all true (and he’s not just trying to word things nicely for the lads in the squad) then it is pretty concerning that we’ll have no proper backup RB, no decent GK, no backup ST, no new CM or backup to Sheaf and no new LB.

We’ll basically have the same squad as last season just with Rudoni swapped in for O’Hare and some new cover on the wings, that’s a very minor improvement imo. If that’s all we get then that basically means the exact same issues of transition from defence to attack and no cover for players like Sheaf or MVE if they get injured, not to mention the fact we’ll have a lovely choice between Collins and Wilson in goal…

No. You should take the rest of the summer off and return at 12.30 for the Stoke game.

I hope I’m wrong, but with Bidders and Sheaf now being the two ‘senior’ players of the squad (can’t count Wilson, he’s like a childish Mackem Ace Ventura), it’s a lot to rely on the experience of those two. Sheaf has to stay fit, and available, for a start.

Obviously we have players like Eccles and a few others, who have a lot of Championship games under their belt, and know what they’re doing - it’s just having that cool, experienced veteran’s head in the team, that can make a huge difference in certain situations.

I dunno, I’m probably just looking for shit to moan about.

I agree with you to some extent but at the same time I do think there’s a balance between having experience that’s useful and just having experience for the sake of it. It’s only useful if players show their experience on the field, and even if they do are their football abilities any good?

For instance, Godden has a lot of experience in this league and with our squad in general, but he’s past it for this level so he’d sort of be semi-useless to us on the pitch if we still owned him.

And I also wonder what people think actual “experience” is? How is it quantified on the pitch? And who can we say best takes their experience and uses it in their game? I think it’s a very nuanced and hard to explain idea when it comes to building a team.

All that's needed is an onfield organiser who can read the game and vocally lead the team. Not sure that we currently have one.

He's far better than that. And only Wright had more assists than him and only by one which isn't bad for a holding midfield player. Most of his good work goes unnoticed by many because he didn't cost a few million and doesn't have a fancy foreign name.

Yes I agree, I would add Sheaf and Eccles to that. I remember Coventry signing Terry Yorath who was a leader and an obvious Captain. At the time he was a similar age to Sheaf with a similar amount of appearances.

Age isn't the only measure of experience. Drive and maturity are also important attributes.

Then Yorath was shipped out as he had too much influence in the dressing room.
