Stourport Swifts FC 1-2 Coventry United FC

Midland Football League Premier Division – 17/09/2016

United Hold on For The Points

Coventry United returned to the league and just about managed to hold on to all 3 points against a battling Stourport team. Despite racing into a 2-0 lead, the hosts came back to dominate the latter parts and will consider themselves unfortunate not to take anything from the match. Joe Connor made a rare return in goal for Coventry following retirement over a season ago and made some great saves that effectively won the game.

It was Coventry who started the match the stronger with Kai Williams netting twice in the first 17 minutes in a spell of superiority that the team would have expected to kick on from. Williams pounced on a saved shot from Josh O’Grady after just 2 minutes before finishing well after a low cross from Ben Mackey. Mackey himself headed wide from an O’Grady cross later in the half, and Jean Dakouri picked up a yellow card for standing in front of a free kick.

With half time approaching Stourport earned a penalty when Pierre Moudime caught the heels of Joe Phillips inside the area. Joe Pinder made no mistake from the spot to send the teams in 2-1.

Any thoughts of continued dominance for United was quickly quashed by the hosts who looked sharper with more intent following their goal and subsequent half-time team talk. Connor made 2 excellent saves during the half, whilst Coventry struggled to get any chances going bar a Mackey effort late on correctly ruled out for offside. Captain Chris Cox and Adam Bilic also picked up yellow cards for fouls during the match. The team will need to focus on their discipline if they are going to avoid future suspensions.
