We have battery powered string lights for each room, a lot safer than candles and they do pritty well at lighting up areas where you don't want to be fumbling round with a torch, bathroom/kitchen/stairs.

Same in my cupboards cans are getting a bit dated!!I believe my wife started some time ago. I'm sure there's stuff in the bottom of our freezer at least 10 years old!
