Sounds like we are struggling to find form still and don't seem to have anyone who can consistently put the ball in the back of the net. McNulty is now injured with a few others and some will say we scraped a 1-0 win today.
But we don't concede too often and for all the critics, you have to say we are just 3 points from a promotion spot. So if we can be there about's when playing badly then what say you when we start to click?
I can only see us improving so happy with the start we have made and there is a long way to go.

We are just where many of us thought we would be. We have a decent defence and midfield. We have only let in 3 goals in 6 games. That is the best in the division. But we are poor up front. Only one club above 20th has scored less.

I'm happy with where we are to be honest. Some disappointing results, but, our defence is looking like it's going to very strong. If it remains to be the case, the attacking side of the game will take care of itself. I'd be more concerned if we were leaking goals but the goals were free flowing...

Things I think we need to improve:

- scoring early in the game. We did that today so hopefully progress will be made here.

- get results when we fall behind. So far 100% win rate when we score first, 100% lose rate when we concede first. If we're gonna get top 3 we need to be able to overturn deficits.

As for everything else, it's still too early to tell.

When some people throw critisism at Beavon, other people point out that Burton went up off the back of 1-0 wins so having an out-and-out goalscorer wasn't necessary. The way we've started the season, you could argue that we're working on the same principle. At the end of the day, we're used to watching our team lose. Used to having defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Used to buying a pint then knocking it over when we sit at the table. Maybe this year will be different, maybe it won't, but if we're workingto the rule that if we don't concede we can't lose then you'd like to think we'll be up there at the end of the season, even if it's not the greatest spectacle on earth.

He did.

He set up a chance with a lovely cushioned header, then went millimetres from scoring, as the ball crept agonisingly wide of the post, he had a decent shot on the turn saved by the keeper and then he did a lovely flick that would have resulted on us having a clear two against one and run on goal, had he not been cynically hacked down by their defender.

And on that, it really makes my blood boil. They have to make those red card offences, they really do. This taking one for the team, deliberately pulling a player back, or hacking them down, bodychecking them etc. when the player is all but clean through, or to stop them beimg clean through.

One of the worst things about modern football, but seemingly endorsed by pretty much every club and manager in the land.

And of course merely a yellow card, not red, so considered worth doing.

This season should have been about
Beavon starting alongside a natural goal scorer for me.

Is the midfield good? Does it have the right mix? This is where our problem lies for me.

Me too and maybe he still will be?

If he's injured though what's the plan because as it stands there isn't too many options?

Yep, me too. Beavon has said himself in his own words that he is a provider rather than goalscorer.

If Beavon plays you have to have a goalscorer alongside him.

Fingers crossed Ponti may get the last 10-15 minutes at least now.

I think he has to by default if nothing else. Does anyone think playing Vincenti up front as a hatchet man for either Beavon or McNulty is an option? He can clearly win headers....

Not a big fan of that style of footy personally.
I only agree with that in that last 5 mins of games when you are desperate

said this last week to my mate. I think Mcnulty in particular might benefit from a big man to play off.

Interesting to note that, of the pre-season favourites, only Exeter have started strongly. Swindon, Mansfield, Lincoln and Luton are all just behind us. Looks like they're having the same 'settling down' problems that we are. Still optimistic.

I agree with what you say but we do it too. Grimmer was booked at either Yeovil or Chesterfield (cant remember which) for chopping down an opposing player who was in danger of getting through the defence. Like you I think the foul on Beavon was worse than that by McDonald. (I am not sure this was a foul).

Reuben reid would be a good signing in January could be the man to fire us up if we are still there or there abouts

No thanks.

We've already had Peter, Kyel and Les, I not so sure we want another.

The lack of goals against us isn't diwn ti the GK. There has been a lack of shots on target. The midfield is protecting our defence. That is half of their job that they are doing well. Jones has got 66% of our goals. What we are missing is a decent striker that could link up with the midfield. It isn't their fault that there isn't someone.

Burton played like that and got into the championship on the lowest number of goals scored in the division. It's not before time we become resilient at the back

Yep.

Do think it is a bit daft to moan. Yep, we don't look too threatening going forwards, but for years now we have been decrying our defence and we have been letting in goals left right and centre. Now at last we seemingly have a solid back four. As Dan says, that's your starting point and you build from there.

Can't expect all the pieces of the puzzle to all fall into place all at once. Start from a solid base and then tinker around and adjust the forward line until you get the most potent combination.

I am quite happy and will take 1-0 scrappy wins every week.

For all the criticism about how deep we are. When Jones scored we had 4 players in their box including Kelly.

He played a lot further forward yesterday, him and Doyle both had shots too

Which in turn gave Beavon a bit more space to work with and he benefitted from that.

The midfield needs a bit more creativity (and I think it will come). It also lacks someone on the opposite side to Jones who can stretch the width, our downfall at Chesterfield against 10 men. A lot of new players and early days. I am not panicking. But I am a great advocate of "if you don't concede you don't lose."

Goals are the team's responsibility whatever the players position. They will come.
