To be named Rangers manager in the next few days-their 3rd manager of the season and a tricky club to start out at. Will be interesting to see whose accent baffles the other more.

Big job as a first job......

I really don't get this given, this presumption, that good players will make good managers......massive gamble for both club and Gerrard....

Especially for him looking at the rate they get through managers.

Guessing he’s been brought in as he’s the only one that can stop Brendan Rogers from winning a league title.

Can' really fail - come 2nd to Celtic and everyone says impossible job, overhauls them to beat one average team and will be hailed a hero and all will be clamoring for him to be the next Liverpool manager. No risk to him at all imo.

disagree. high pressure job, if he can't hack it won't bode well for his future career.
Failing in Glasgow didn't go too well for another Liverpool legend John Barnes.
Unless they get some money from somewhere he'll also be operating on a far inferior budget to try and bridge the gap with.

This was when it was competitive every season though and both teams expected to win the title, Rangers will expect to finish 2nd for the next 2 to 3 years whilst gradually closing the gap.
3rd would be seen as a failure but they really shouldn't be falling behind Aberdeen from next season onwards. As a strong leader at Liverpool for years he should be able to inject some passion and fight into the current squad whilst maybe improving the squad with his contacts in the English game. A lot of the Liverpool youth squad hes been coaching this season would get a game for Rangers currently.

they had a fair chunk of support who thought they'd win the league this year until the 3-2 defeat against Celtic at Ibrox. Expectation at a club like Rangers are huge.
I'm not saying he'll fail, but I don't buy this easy first job talk. I think he's taken on a big task.

And Celtic had won the League once in 11 years when Barnes was appointed.

Can't see any talk of him being a Catholic but a poll suggests 60% say no for him as the next manager.

he's not. He chose a Catholic secondary school because football wise it had a better reputation than the Cof E school he could have gone to and it had links with the Liverpool academy.

It's mentioned on his Wiki and referenced and found mentions in these articles:

Profile on Steven Gerrard: An enigma who may be simpler than he seems

Steven Gerrard: The humble hero who lived the dream and used his talent to help others

Its certainly an unusual one but you only have to look at their previous managers to show you were the club currently is. Murty was always going to be short term and Caixinha was a disaster. I agree with rob's comment in that he cannot lose unless he slips to 3rd in the league.

Without some major investment, they are not going to get close to Celtic for a long time and as soon as Rangers start spending the pressure will go back to Celtic to start doing the same. Not since Souness and Smith (maybe Mcleish) that they have had a decent manager which could attract decent players so they are probably looking at Stevie G and Gary Mac to do this.
