Coventry City FC Sign Upgraded League and Data Package With StatsBomb

Coventry City Football Club has expanded its partnership with StatsBomb with a significant upgrade to the club’s existing data package.
statsbomb.com

Club have signed a new package with scouting analytics company. Great to see investments made in ensuring we sign the right players! Finally catching up with all the top clubs in this field should stand us in great stead now we actually have a few quid to spend

"The new ownership has massively increased investment into analytics, and we're pleased to begin a new partnership with them for an extensive data package.

This package will help them expand their player recruitment across the globe, enabling them to find talent in untapped markets. We thank Jack Coles, Dean Austin, Mark Robins and Doug King for their continued trust in our data.”

Hoping we are looking for players scoring high in the following:

Got rid of it

Punt forward when in safe possession

Needless heavy tackle and foul when under little danger

Some of the stuff on the sport science front at Github is realy good. Other things, not so good.

It is a development site full of ideas.

That reminds me, I need to get some pick 'n' mix when I next get to pop down to Woolworths.

Fun!

If I had more free time I’d love to see what kind of analysis can be done, it looks from a quick glance like player position info taken from video footage? Have they got a data dictionary anywhere or something?

Have a quick skim through these:

Metrics & Explainers Archives - Hudl Statsbomb | Data Champions

statsbomb.com

Generally speaking I'd say they're pretty much best of the best & lead the way in improving most metrics.

The Statsbomb xG model is much more advanced than most for example:

Upgrading Expected Goals

Today is a preview of how our new models show that there’s a lot of untapped potential left in this simple foundational concept.

I'll leave this here.

Visualize the full history of code contributions to the Lichess repositories in 2 minutes. Each dot is a source code file, with developers creating and updating them. The lines between files represent the filesystem directories they're in. Watch as they are created, updated, and sometimes deleted by the increasing number of developers who contribute to Lichess.

That's really MR's surprise formation for Saturday isn't it? Sunderland are going to be in a lot of trouble.

Yeah but I only have so may brain cycles per day and this place doesn’t use any so it doesn’t count. The last thing I want after 8 hours of wrangling data is to wrangle some more data.

I wouldn't just say ideas, some of the most production ready open source code is there.

Stats. Great. Where is the context functionality. Just hope it’s used as a very very marginal check tool rather than having any meaningful decisions coming from it.

Absolutely fucking brilliant. Statsbomb one of the good guys and also really bloody know their stuff. No surprise we’ve been using their data analytics since 2020.

I doubt they’ll be used to relentlessly call for Bidwell to be dropped in favour of Dasilva.

I mean that's exactly what they were used for. You really don't get it do you. Also it's funny this was announced on the same day you brought up 'obscure' stats

And I haven't called for Bidwell to be dropped in favour of Dasilva. Since he came into the team I've said he deserves the shirt.

Well the good underlying stats have begun to bare fruit regarding xg, performance and recruitment so I am happy for us to move in this direction.

So they weren't obscure stats, they're actually a big part of the game? Tying yourself in knots here

And bore off? You're the one that brought up a post from about 9 months ago in the first place!
