It's more about 21st century value engineering than construction standards per se

In fairness if we're using Cov Baths as an example, mid 20th century construction didn't exactly excel either

Perhaps but the baths are getting on for 70 years old and like most public buildings were not well maintained

20 years is about right for plastic cladding isn’t it? The fact plastic cladding looks garbage is a separate point.

Went on the stadium tour yesterday morning, which was interesting. Have to say when the stadium is empty it does look really tatty, especially the cladding.

The baths was an architectural gem, it's a cyring shame what has happened to it. You don't know what you've got til it's gone and all that...

40 Years Ago: The new Coventry Swimming Baths

Taken from Building with Steel, 1966 These splendid new swimming baths are now in full operation: a number of interesting design features are incorporated in the structure, one being the ‘wish bone…

Apart from the fact it was built the 'wrong way round' it is/was a very nice example of post-war architecture. And I don't say that often.

There’s a park just down from us that has 4 bins around it and there’s 1 bin that gets overused while the other 3 don’t ever seem to fill up. What happens when that 1 bin gets full? It’ll be stuffed up to the holes, and then people will just put their rubbish/dog shit bags on the floor around it.

Worth resurrecting this - it's now a matter of public record in Fraser Group's accounts that they sold for ~50m, quoting them:

£33.8m gain from the disposal of the Coventry Arena
Source

We of course know they had to sink more in immediately and as part of the bidding to keep everything afloat, as well as I think it was making a marginal loss. So it's not 33.8m profit but I think more like 20m... still, very tidy profit for Frasers. I guess it was a no lose for them - either they end up acquiring the club or they run the arena better as a business than previous owners. Mike could not have predicted Doug would takeover and that he would be willing to buy / invest 50m... but it all panned out rather nicely for them. Kudos!
