You keep trying to advocate for arbitrary practices, we should sign players from abroad, we just play a certain formation regardless of personnel.

As if that will bring about Improvement.

It's like you've only just started watching football and don't understand the nuances.

I reckon you might be Doug King!

It’s funny how people remember things. The reality is, Sheaf and Vik were examples of what a good job the coaching team have done with these players.

It happens year in, year out and it’s the same culprits making the same hasty judgements. The recruitment policy has been criticised at stages every season since L2 yet we’ve consistently climbed the football league.

We’ve spent millions, yes. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a pittance compared to the big dogs in the league - Burnley, Sheff U and Leeds.

But 9 games is more than enough to categorically state that someone is shite and will never make the grade, right? Or in EMC’s case a grand total of 4 starts

Bearing in mind the amount of time people have been made to look stupid before you'd think they'd learn not to jump the gun.

Or at least to prefix their early negative opinions with 'up until now' or 'so far'.

why is it not enough just to say “not shown much yet, none of them have”, as opposed to coming up with these weird distortions and what are basically lies in order to exaggerate how bad some players are?

Can we name one player at all who’s in good form so far this season? I’d be struggling to come up with one

Robins is on record saying the coaches are settling into their roles - it’s too early to evaluate them at this point. The early start hasn’t been great, but plenty of time to improve things.

Let’s think back to 2017 when AV was starting, there was doubt expressed at the time of MR to coach without his previous long time assistant, Steven Taylor.

It could all end in tears but knee jerking based on little data is a sure way to make mistakes.

That's fair comment, but don't people have to extend that same courtesy to Robins and the players as well?

It was an obligation to buy, so it’s no different really.

Yes, we’ve probably overpaid. But that’s a separate issue from signing the wrong player in the first place. And EMC was always going to be more expensive given his output.
It is, because the obligation to buy was on a set criteria including making a specific number of appearances. If the coaching team didn't think he was up to it, they wouldn't have played him and therefore wouldn't have met the criteria for the obligation to buy. So completely different.

Sky Blues have 'obligation' not 'option' to buy Ben Sheaf

Arsenal midfielder Ben Sheaf has become Coventry City's ninth summer signing

I think I’m consistent across the board on this. We can all agree the start hasn’t been good enough, but I don’t think we’ve been as bad as our league position suggests. It takes a small win run with a bit of luck on side and all of a sudden the narrative changes.

When things go badly there’s this inquisition into why and there has to be someone or something to blame. Be it Simms, Dr Claire Roberts, AV leaving or Robins himself.

Patience is a virtue here and Robins has earned the trust of the board and the fans to turn things around.

We should have got more against Watford, but I’m struggling to see any other performances where we didn’t get what we deserved. It’s been bad, it has time to get better.

That’s where we’re at.

In hindsight..the worst sale was Hamers.

Ridiculous talent..he can single handedly drive any team in this division.

He can lift any team. His stats as a championship midfielder are plain stupid.

He will get more goals and assists this season. Than Rudoni/Sheaf/Eccles/Torp combined.

Instead of wasting£4m on EMC we should have used that money to keep him.

irreplaceable. and wasted his money.

Was that even possible though?

He didn’t sign a new contract. I think realistically the choice was take the 15m or get nothing the following summer.

How???

Peter Taylor played for England when in Div 3. Even allowing the rebranding, there's Dele Alli and many, many others prior.

I hope we don't end up in one of the Scandinavian leagues for similar reasons, that would be a real pain.

I don’t just “advocate arbitrary practices” for the sake of it, I have my own reasoning behind them, maybe it’s flawed but it’s just an opinion. I’ve talked in depth before about the idea behind why I think European signings are generally better than L1 signings, and yes I’ve got no evidence to back this up, but it’s my personal opinion that championship clubs overpay for L1 players because fans/scouts/managers etc have a more in-depth view of L1 than other leagues around the world, we follow English football more than Swedish or Belgian football for instance. So any player that does well in L1 is in more of a spotlight than the equivalent league abroad, but it doesn’t mean that they’re better than their European equivalent.

For instance, how much would have Kitching been worth if he had played for an Italian Serie B team? I highly doubt it would have been £4 mil. There’s just a bigger pool of talent abroad as well, so many leagues to look at. I just think it’s much better (and has been much better) for us to look at Europe than to risk £4-5 mil on a player from L1.

(Sorry it’s a bit of a Parklife, it’s hard to describe the gut feeling I have about L1 )

He would’ve had to have been a complete disaster not to trigger the clause.

He made 30 appearances that season, EMC will almost certainly reach that unless he gets a significant injury. If the clause was something like 20/25 apps it will get triggered before you can really make a judgement anyway.

The point is, a football forum is often not the best barometer of a new signing's talent.....

I'd sooner trust the judgement of Robins and his team, than the ravings of a few madmen on here.... as more often than not they get it right.

I remember during his loan spell with us after a few barren games, he scored the first of what came to be one of his trade mark goals when he beat a couple of players coming in from the left wing and buried the shot (can't recall against which team or where, but it's not important)....I already rated him but it was one of those moments of absolute clarity when if you hadn't already seen the potential, everything suddenly became blindingly obvious.

Name and shame then, genuinely don't know how I'll come out of this, but I do recall saying it was a ploy between player and manager to keep the fee low, much like I predicted that Simms would come alive when he did!

I did say it’s hard to put into words my feelings about buying L1 players Basically I just feel that the price tag of L1 players is higher than what they’re actually worth, due to them being in the spotlight of British fans/scouts/managers, when compared to the average European equivalent which requires more in-depth scouting. Also maybe the jump in quality from L1 to the championship is higher than from say the Belgian Pro League or the Swedish Allsvenskan for example, maybe?
