It is those driving like idiots and those who don't concentrate that are the biggest danger. What would make the biggest difference would be more police on the road.

It is more to do with not driving to the conditions. This includes the weather or the surroundings. It isn't just pure speed. If it was just pure speed motorways would be the most dangerous roads and not the safest.
I am a high mileage driver. I don't always keep to the speed limit. I have been legally on the road since my 16th birthday. So I have nearly been on the road for 35 years. I have never had an accident. But I don't have a clue how many I have seen. And not 1 was speed related. Normally lack of concentration.
i read one of the articles that we are all going to have to have telematics boxes fitted as well so big brother will be watching us well and truley,i dont mind the speed limiter just dont like the fact i will be tracked everytime i am in the car

Nothing personal. But over the years how many times have I seen women using their mirror to put makeup on? Eating breakfast? Reading the paper doesn't happen these days because people have phones. Looking anywhere but at the road. Middle lane hogs driving slower than the traffic. I could go on. Yet some people love to make out that it is all about speed. Maybe speed mixed together with one or more of the above.Don't take these things so personally.
These laws are not to prevent you from causing an accident.
They are to stop other people causing accidents.
Totally agree Astute. I drove professionally for some 30 years or so. Lorries, double-deck buses, coaches, limousines etc. I drove all over the country from Coventry, such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, north-east (Sunderland Toyota), regular drops down to Portsmouth, deliveries up to Glasgow, Ayr and Kilmarnock. Delivered Harley Davidson motor-cycles all over the country as well (crated up 7 at a time on the back of a wagon). In all those years I never once had an accident or got a speeding ticket. But some of the driving I saw from other motorists was absolutely horrendous. My pet hate is using a phone whilst driving. That deserves a massive fine and instant ban in my eyes! I think it is actually overridable in such circumastance - heaven forbin that one should patiently wait for the most appropriate moment to overtake or brake to cut back in behind instead. An affront to one's masculinity innit?I'm all in favour of reducing speed, but there are occasions when you might need to accelerate over the limit slightly when overtaking. I think the RAC or AA have picked up on this.

Initially using cruise control (at the actual limit) can frustrate as so many whizz past but invariably I catch the traffic up in roadworks or near junctions.Bloody stupid idea. I have a speed limiter that I can adjust so I can't go above the limit. But the flaw with this is, that going down a hill or gradient, the car will just go faster due to weight and gradient so I have to hover my foot over the brake pedal anyway. Can't use gears to slow down - it's an automatic.

Makes me wonder if a 30mph limit on every road (except 20mph ones - that would stand) might actually work bettwr by keeping traffic flowing more smoothly...but enforcing non-middle lane driving/hogging might be an effoective deterrent first off, bit then one has to address the tsilgating issue. Usually people drive too close to deliberately foil anyone cutting in to leave major roads
