OK so you have an issue with somebody saying "take to the streets" and being called out on it.

Yet you posted this about people arming themselves and taking to the streets? You also mention civil disobedience and not being peaceful.

Back in the 1950/60/70/80s the local people wouldn't have waited for the police. They'd have beat him to within an inch of his life and if they didn't the police would have done the same .
The police know the public outrage on this, and the growing speculation on the internet which is inaccurate and fueling hatred. They should have told the public what is needed to at least quell speculation instead of dithering.

Of course, should be taken with a pinch of salt at this point but I'm seeing stories of some bloke turning up at the Vigil with a knife which sparked it all off.

That's why they're attacking the police and throwing bricks and wheelie bins at them?!

I'm not really following the pages of arguments but the pictures of the three girls who died (as in the ones given by the families rather than anything nasty) really got me. Just three sweet kids who like Taylor Swift off to do something fun in the summer holidays and that happens. Unimaginable.

Not a clue mate. Emotions are obviously running high and people are doing stupid shit by the looks of it. Not helpful though, I agree.

One thing said:
Merseyside Police arrested a man and seized a flick knife after receiving a report at 6.50pm that he had been seen with a weapon on Eastbank Street.
No one was injured and the 32-year-old man from Standish was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article, and taken into custody.
Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy said: “We know too well the devastating impact knife crime can have for victims, their families and friends, and those who carry them.
“This week has seen an unspeakable tragedy unfold in Southport, and this incident occurred a short distance from where a vigil had been happening where the community was paying their respects to all those affected.
“Officers made a swift arrest and have seized a knife that could have been used to cause harm in our communities.
“Those offenders who carry them have no place whatsoever in our communities.

Riot said:
“At around 7.45pm, a large group of people – believed to be supporters of the English Defence League – began to throw items towards a local mosque on St Luke’s Road in Southport.
“Officers who are deployed are currently dealing with criminal behaviour and violence with bottles and wheelie bins being thrown at them.
“As a result, an officer has suffered a suspected broken nose and police vehicles have been damaged and set alight.
“Additional patrols are now in attendance, including the Dog Section.”

Incident, vigil, “protest” [rioting] repeat.

Almost surprised the same didn’t happen for Keaton.

It's fucking disgusting. Even if there is a need for this protest, which I'm not sure there is, at least give the community a bit of breathing space to grieve.
Yesterday they had a maniac killing children in their community, today theyve got a mob attacking police.

Of course these attention-seeking balloons are making a horrible situation for grieving families all about them instead.
What are they protesting about exactly-he's not a migrant and unlikely to be Muslim

I mean, you've got to be some kind of special to turn up to a vigil for what happened yesterday with a knife

After the boat people of earlier, surely lesson learned that it'd probably be best to wait don't you think, rather than quoting other self-interested people. The police have given their quotes so far, that surely suffices for now.

If this is true this is why we need mandatory custodials for carrying a knife. He should be looking at 3,5, 10 whatever the mandatory term is.

If you take a look on social media there are multiple reputable news outlets now confirming it's true and pictures of his arrest

That's evidently what kicked things off. By all accounts it wa s peaceful vigil until he rocked up waving a knife about. What does anyone think would happen after that?

But he's quickly arrested. Why carry on attacking the police after that?
I've seen footage of the police having bricks and wheelie bins thrown at them.

Did you know, Michael Keaton is actually the grandson of Buster.

He isn't really, but I have been telling that story at dinner parties for years.

The same as Josh Widdicombe's mum is Ann.

Must be a nightmare living in Southport with yesterday and now rioting tonight, the locals must be bewildered. These riots have the possibility to spread to other towns and cities during the summer months, let's hope not but can see it happening.

Some shameful scenes tonight but as many of us said it's not surprising that things are starting to boil over.

Its one thing to argue amongst ourselves on a football forum, and another to be going out there and breaking police officers noses and targeting a place of worship.

The reality is that there's a build up of anger and frustration about the immigration situation, and nobody in power wants to even entertain a discussion about it let alone acknowledge that there's a problem.

This will only get worse.

It's awful and the timing is so very off.

Give these people and friends and family, chance to grieve, not have to be confronted by and having to hear about riots and police attacks just hours after the tragic loss of young kids.

That helps no-one.

Sometimes I'd like to just stop the world and get off, with my wife and kids. It's such a f*&king horrible place sometimes.

I genuinely worry what it'll be like when my 2 yr old daughter and 5yr old son are older. It's scary.

Is anyone a actually surprised by the fact that there have been mobs in the streets after what has happened?
As for it being the EDL I've seen the footage on the main channels and I'm pretty convinced that whilst the police would like us to think it was organised by the EDF I'm not sure it was. Looks largely spontaneous anger by locals in the main.
I'm not condoning it but I'd be more surprised if nothing had happened. There must be unimaginable anger in that town.
As for targeting a mosque, if this lad is a Christian then perhaps the police should make some sort of announcement on this, like, he comes from a Christian family .
