Don't know if anyone else sensed it too, but I could see a goal coming from Southend when they had that free kick for their first goal. Just felt it coming.

Worryingly too, I was certain JOB was going to miss ours.

It was a horrible psychic night out there tonight.

Yep, I said JOB was missing it. His run up gave it away.

Its common knowledge he's out till December/January time, he has a fracture and ligament damage. Definitely not good!

Second half was much more secure Otis! Only one team winning that and would have done but for a fabulous save at the end. Stokes huge positive tonight

Absolutely I was screaming at the players to not leave space at the corner. Very amateurish to allow Southend the room on the edge of the box and in the centre

First half was very sloppy, Southend weren't great and didn't do much to get there goals but we deserved to be behind for how sloppy we were.

Second half we battered them, could have won had it not been for worldy performance from there keeper. Still looking good going forward, defence is shaky though. We're gifting goals away the last two home matches to teams that otherwise never look like scoring, Reda caught out of position again in the build up to the penalty. I have no problem with him trying to step out to win the ball back but he has to make better decisions and be sure he has a good chance of winning the ball before committing himself. Burge not going to be good enough, haven't seen much from him these first 5 matches to say. Give Cook ago or bring in a replacement I say.

Murphy I thought looked excellent tonight and miles better than the first impression he made.

Scoring 12 goals and being the league's top scorers after 5 games is a positive.

Southend had only scored one goal in four games, so them bagging two tonight and looking like they could score more too at times, I think has to be a worry.

tbh I didn't think Southend looked like creating much, however we looked like we could gift wrap them another. You can see why Reda was moved to LB at previous club, he over commits too often. He has to curb that side of his game and have controlled aggression rather than reckless aggression.

I also think when the opposition are countering we're not getting into our defensive shape quick enough as we're spending too long chasing the ball trying to win it back. I know Guardiola used to employ the 6 second rule in his teams, basically if they lose the ball they will chase an harass the opposition to win the ball back within 6 seconds, if they don't they will then get into there defensive shape.

From what I recall though, they missed at least 2 sitters.

I think like Crewe Southend are a competent side. Both will struggle to score goals but both scored 2 against us. Both look fairly solid defensively so may scape enough points to stay in the division. We played lovely football against Crewe and managed the win. Tonight we didn't play that well but got the point. We could have nicked it at the death but we could have lost too.
Murphy was awful first half I thought but second half was a lot better. He seems able to go pasta man but then seems indecisive as to what next. I think he will grow into the team and become an exciting player

Much better second half and I apologize to Murphy who had a crap first half but had a really good second half. Stared running at people and doing some nice runs and touches. Much better.

Overall it depends how you look at it. Missed a penalty AGAIN and drew at home to a poor side who will finish bottom 6-7 for sure. And conceded 2 really poor goals.

Or we salvaged a point from nothing and climbed a few places in the league. Scored 2 good goals and showed fight to the very end.

I'm really mixed about tonight.

we need to start playing with a lead. why cant we retain ball and stay calm 5 mins after taking a lead? so annoying.

triangles wernt there as much tongiht and the dreaded 10 min throw ins were back

but we nearly won, so gotta believe we will be near the top come seasons end.

I think it's easy for teams to play us. Close us down and don't give us time or space. When Burge had the ball, both short balls to our defenders left and right were covered and the long kick gave them the ball. I thought Southend had done their homework.

The next time we get a penalty, we should decide who is going to take it ... then pick someone else.

I thought the referee was appalling got a lot of decisions wrong ,five bookings in the second half and each time he stopped play for about a minute while he wrote in his note pad , also his insistence on making them take throw ins from the exact spot , maybe my view is skyblues tinted but definetely one of the worse refs we have had for a while in my opinion

They did have two great chances before we scored, although Johnson headed past the post when he should have buried it. People on her didn't realise Southend are a better side than their league position suggests.

No you are correct he slowed the play every time he could, I think he wasn't the fittest and that is what they do to catch their breath but spoils it for the fans. Didn't book their bloke at the very start and books players for little trips and pulls.

Got to agree, the referee was atrocious last night, even if I were not wearing sky blue glasses he ruined the game.

He was poor! How he's gone all this season, albeit a small number of games, without giving a red card is beyond me! Have cards inconsistently and didn't really favour any side in doing so. Made the rules up as he went along it seemed like!

The Murphy chance in the bottom corner didn't look like it was going in from where I was sat, great save!

Forgot about his long ranger too!

Enough bad defending in that 2 minute clip to lose several games, though both goals were well taken and Southend's keeper looked in good nick.

First game this season due to holidays. First season ticket for a long long time too.

First my concerns (not negatives!):

Would like to see Burge command the area a bit more. Also he needs to be careful when kicking out of his hands as a couple of times in 2nd half I'm sure he was handling out of the area. Also needs to release ball earlier when strikers call for it.

Centre halves were too square and out of position at times Johnson especially usually mis-timing a jump. Played against 2 very experienced strikers which I don't think will happen too much this season.

Only negative was the officials for me. Linesman was way off pace 2nd half. Ref was inconsistent for both sides. I don't care if it's the 1st minute or 91st minute, tackles of that nature (2 in 1st 2 minutes) should be booked. Fleck got booked for a lot less.

Positives:

Playing our way out of trouble. The full backs always gave an option to receive the ball instead of it just being lumped up field and inviting more pressure.

Goals coming from all positions. Armstrong will get more attention from defenders so may not get as many opportunities. Although his feet and movement of the ball to create chances for himself was impressive.

The fans:

Loving the fact we've all been bunched together which is creating a much better atmosphere. Also a lot more encouragement, Fleck had a torrid 5 minutes in second half. Didn't hear anyone have a go at him but were encouraging him. Also Murphy acknowledged the encouragement when he kept taking the full back on.

Early days but loving the positive play.

Fair play to Southend fans for the number they brought too.

Nice to come away disappointed with the result but not the display.

That'sa super summary

I thought Murphy got all that space second because of Armstrong and that's good.

Not necessarily Mowbray, but maybe he thought we were better than we actually are. Do you think our squad is good enough?

He's been saying for ages he wants more players in and are not the finished product. So he obviously didn't think that, he's been playing down our early table positions.
Who else would you mean other than Mowbray? He's in charge of the budget...
