So how would you do it ? (1 Viewer)

Dont get me wrong this is not a way to try to justify what SISU have done.... its more a brain storming of ideas. We keep saying how SISU got it wrong - how would we get it right ?

You know the set up. You are the owner of a football club that has struggled over recent years. Having put in a significant amount of money £25m+ already you have taken a more active role because losses have not decreased and your loan keeps increasing. It is March 2011 (yes i do mean 2011 and you get the benefit of hindsight). How would you have done it ?

Justify any major expenditure or player purchases. Explain where the money to fund your plans comes from. How does the business pay its way. Look at all aspects, players, manager, ground, off the pitch etc. How would you involve the fans, how would you make a better business.

Just interested to see what ideas people have.

for instance a big part of how we go forward would have to be some significant and meaningful fans ownership. It could raise funds yes but more importantly makes the fans more involved in the club, helps develop a sense of togetherness plus gives them a voice. I would have looked at getting an experienced but young manager in because i know its going to be a struggle this season. I would have cut my losses on certain players and shipped them out (Eastwood for starters). I would hold regular briefings and lay the cards on the table - we have no money do not expect big signings the club is in danger and we need to concentrate on the finances this year. I would make use of the youngsters and use part of the money saved on the likes of Eastwood to fund some loans ..... thats some of it at least

over to you.............

Quite simply, I would have stuck with the business model outlined when I took over: investment in young up-and-coming players resulting in a strong squad ready to push for the play-offs and promotion in 3 to 4 years. By sticking to the business model I would not only have the respect of the players, management, staff and supporters, but also of local business, especially ACL, Higgs Trust, Coventry City Council.

As soon as Scott Dann and Danny Fox were sold it was quite obvious that something was drastically wrong - Ranson, Hoffman and Coleman knew this - Ranson and Coleman offered their resignations and it took Hoffman to persuade them to stay. Since then we've been in a spiral of decline.

Because our owners haven't kept to their word there has naturally developed a feeling of mistrust and ill-feeling concerning CCFC.

Reducing budgets is understandable, even the sales of Fox and Dann who wanted to go and could get better deals were ok in my book.

Some of the areas where they have/had it wrong include missing out on the early signing of players like Gunnar Turner and Westwood, lies over King (yes I do believe his story despite his history), constant mis-communications (Brody etc), an ever evolving door of board members, not addressing the management issue last summer and previous ill-timed management changes, constantly moving the goalposts, misjudging the budget for crowd levels and the biggest of all in my book of trying to whore Thomas around before he had played a game.

Rob, I agree with all of your points. However the reason I'm focussing on the sale of Dann and Fox was because it signalled the start of our decline, and planted the seeds of mistrust about our owners' motives. Fox was told to find a new club after one season, and as soon as the £££ signs appeared when bigger clubs came after Dann he was sold too early and for very short-term financial gain. The left back position has remained a problem ever since, and in my opinion we lost an unsung diamond in Dann.

We need honesty and transparency - until we get new owners this simply won't happen.

And if our new owners include the members of the board from the prior regime expecft much of the same.

Can't see that happening, kduffy - our current 'board' is little more than a bunch of SISU-appointed puppets/muppets.

HONESTY....That's what I would have given from day 1. Most people realise that football, like any other business, HAS to live within its' means. If Sisu had done this then I think most fans would have empraced their ownership and would have been more inclined to support them. The fact is they did not and simply employed idiots who spouted rubbish and downright lies thus leading to the present appathy and mistrust.
