I am on the hunt for a new Smart Watch. I did have an Apple Watch which randomly died before Christmas, and I have been using my old FitBit Charge 2 since, however that has now also decided to die. Neither can be fixed - I have tried myself and taken them to various shops who confirm the same.

I mainly use it for activity tracking (predominantly running), but also find the notifications (messages, WhatsApp etc) useful. I didn't use the Apple Watch to anywhere near its capacity but I would like to make more use of the functionality whatever watch I end up with this.

Any recommendations would be great.

Thanks in advance!

If you’re willing to use an Apple Watch again, the series 3 is only £229 and serves well

I always found The Theory of Everything a smart watch.

Never really got the idea of them aside from running. If you have to have your phone on you then its just an unnecessary extra. Rather stick to a traditional watch.

Don't bother with Fitbit, I have had 4 or 5 watches now and they've all failed in under a year.
I've just got a Huawei one which has all those features for £70. Only issue is that it doesn't integrate with Strava but great otherwise.

I would never buy a watch that you have to recharge.
I don't even like watches that use batteries.
They inevitably result in a collection of watches with dead batteries.

Got to be handy for the mature customer I'd think .
All the vitals they can monitor?

Had a Fitbit- ok, cheap and cheerful but the alerts very temperamental and they fall to bits. Got a Garmin which is great, does everything- only downside is it’s not a ‘plug and play’ as the Fitbit, but I like it a lot- will get a good 6 days battery or 3 days if you use the GPS lots. The Huawei one looks really good and I know a few people who have one and love it.

I’ve got a Apple Watch I’m happy with but I have been eyeing the TicWatch if I fancied a change.

TicWatch Pro - a premium smartwatch with 2-30 days of battery life.

For a good looker try a Withings. For performance go for Polar.

Got a Polar V800 (bought on line when pissed). Fantastic watch and does far more than I need it to do in terms of fitness data. Quite big on the wrist but a very well made piece of equipment.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went for a Garmin Venu in the end, it was between that and another Apple Watch, but we found a great deal for the Venu so thought I would give it a try. It arrived today - not as intuitive as the Apple Watch, but going for a short run tomorrow which will be the real test, as that is where they are supposed to excel.

I got a Breitling last year. Paid €15 for it on holiday by the beach but I'm sure it's legit

I have the ActiFace screen on mine, you get all the info you need and it doesn’t look cheesy, highly recommended. And if you’re running/ cycling then when you’re on that activity GPS will come on, so that will drain battery faster, make sure you have 15% beforehand if you’re going for more than an hour.

The ‘pulse ox’ is really clever, but set that to only take readings during the night or that will hammer the battery- you can turn it on manually for a run if you want to though.

I am really pleased with mine, it’s the best for fitness I’ve ever used, and I didn’t really need another phone on my wrist. Oh one more thing- be careful what alerts you set up, I ticked ‘email’ as well and it was going off hundreds of times per day!
