"Coventry's win means they have now lost just one of their last eight matches, and while the Sky Blues might have started the season slowly after losing both Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer in the summer, they look increasingly well set for another tilt at the play-offs."

Sunderland 0-3 Coventry: Black Cats mauled in Michael Beale's first game in charge

Michael Beale's first game as Sunderland head coach ended in disappointment as his side were beaten 3-0 by Coventry at the Stadium of Light.

I still think we'll fall just short this year. The league is too tough.

Next season we'll tear it apart

Its no different to last season really, top 4 sewn up and a load of clubs fighting it out for 5th and 6th.
Think the quality of 3rd and 4th will be better admittedly.

Agreed, this season is all about the rebuild after loosing so many of last seasons squad, including 2 of the best players we've had for years.

I think the playoffs again, would be too much to expect this season, but next season should see us well placed for a genuine promotion push.

We’re still a natural goal scorer and a decent centre mid (to partner Sheaf) off being genuine contenders imo. For example, Brentford replaced Watkins with Toney. We’ve replaced Gyokeres with Simms and havent replaced Hamer full stop.

Convinced we'll bring a midfielder in in January.
Can't see us doing anything striker wise.

Team is improving but still our forwards are lacking. Need to bring someone in. Can't rely on midfielders and defenders to score the goals.

Great day out in Newcastle and quick "smash and grab" in Sunderland.

Not sure. We just beat 7th 3-0 away from home. Say what you want about their recent form, they were still 7th. And Hull don't look like a particularly special side. 1st to 4th do look a cut above though.

Maybe I’m just being greedy and wanting a season where we just run away with the title!

We were robbed of it in 2020 with Covid and St Andrews. We never really got to see it

We score more goals than we did last season, we're on 30 so far at the halfway point. We scored 58 last season. The natural goalscorer stuff is clichéd rubbish imo.

We replaced Gyokeres with Wright. We replaced Tyler Walker with Simms.

The goals are spread our across the team more, which is much healthier. Would still like to see more goals from set pieces - CB's.

Still feel we're going to fall short this year. However this time last year I would have said the exact same thing...

If the January signings can make the impact McNally & BNC did last year I think we could have a real shot.

Just visited the forums for the other Championship teams. Not even a murmur about today other that to address Beale's time at Sunderland is likely to be very limited. We're not on anyone's radar, exactly like this time last season. Get a couple of players in Jan and playoffs could certainly be within touching distance. Getting into the playoffs would be a praiseworthy event considering our start and would mean more Sky money which wouldn't hurt our warchest and preparing for a real push in 24/25.

But not getting my hopes up as I doubt even if we did make it that we'd get through. Some stiff opposition between here and there.

If we did sneak into the playoffs I have visions of edging past Southampton to then come unstuck by Ed Sheeran Town in the final.

I am torn between ginger solidarity and the prospect of him getting his guitar out on the pitch after Dasilva puts his penalty into orbit

Funnily enough, I'd thought similar, except beating Ipswich, to then lose to the Saints ( and as I detest Russell Martin, I'd be bitter for years, whereas I was fairly sanguine post Luton)

I’m still convinced Ipswich will drop off and don’t think they’ll make the playoff finals.

They could show relegation form for the rest of the season and still make the play offs.

To clarify, I think they’ll finish top 6 and lose to their opponent in the playoffs.

Can see it. We have always struggled against Martin's style of play. Too many games against Swansea, we've sat back, tried pressing and everything in between. He seems to have employed his tactics on Southampton now as well. His idea of possession football may be stats friendly but it's a dire watch for home and away fans.

I think February is going to make or break our season. This push is going to continue through January.

The two strikers seem to be working harder. I heard criticism from fans on CWR. Oggie countered that Wright had a role in 2 of the goals. The likes of Simms may be better set for next season after a full season with us.

We are moving in the right direction for sure and some of our signings are looking at home now, even Wright has improved.
Simms though isn’t gonna rip up any trees with his close control and spatial awareness……

Wright played a part in all 3, twice good with his back to goal using his strength to hold a player off

We only just sneaked in last year. I think we've left ourselves too much to do personally.

We've played one more game and have 3 less points at this stage.

We are six points off with 23 games left. No way is that too much.

It's not, but his point stands that we've given ourselves a far bigger mountain to climb, it's not impossible.
