Being a relatively 'new' fan compared to most on here (my first game being the second season in the champ)I've always just assumed the mascot had been there for years and years before..
Any info from some of the 'older' fans would be we welcomed as to sky blue sams origins and how long he's been about. Were there any previous mascots? ect
My kid brother was one of the first Sky Blue Sams'. I remember a fan trying to pull the head off.....My kid brother grabbed him and then body slammed him on the track round the pitch at HR.
Up North Sky Blue...That time wasn't my brother..I can asure you of that mate. lol.
When I stewarded back at Highfield Road the fella who dressed as Sky Blue Sam, who was only a young lad - walked toward me before one game dressed in the blue elephant outfit carrying the head part under his arm. I said "hello" to him in a kind of fellow worker way and replied, "no someone's ripped the trunk off".......
My son (called Sam) is now nearly 13 and when he was born he had a Sky Blue Sam baby grow so that was in the Prem penultimate season....I think he was already pretty established by then....
I've been following City for nearly 50 years and to be honest, I just can't remember Sky Blue Sam originating. He just seems to have always been around! (Not saying he's been with us for 50 years though!) Surely someone on these forums has an actual date somewhere? Would be an interesting fact.
In the City exhibition at the Herbert there was memorabilia with a cartoon elephant on wearing a Cov shirt dating back from when we were promoted to the top flight.
