Forgive my ignorance, but can anyone tell me what 'Oysters' refers to in the original anthem penned by Jimmy Hill?

Yeah but they folded in 1937 so it's not what Jimmy Hill would be writing about in 1962.

First time song was sung at a game was in Colchester in 1962 maybe they got their nickname mixed up

Just spoke to a club historian and it was Colchester Town.

I can only assume that a club's nickname will stick around for years, even if they went into obscurity. CCFC will always be known as the "The Sky Blues" and even if (Heaven forbid!) that we went the way of Colchester all those years ago, people all over the country who know team nicknames, would remember who the Sky Blues were.

According to Wiki....Colchester Town FC were effectively replaced by Colchester United FC......Town were the original Colchester team & also the original tenants of Layer Road.....

....when Utd. formed (as a sort of breakaway club from Town) they took many of their players & supporters with them so perhaps Utd. were also known as "Oysters" for a few decades....

...or maybe Dear old Sir Jimmy just thought it scanned well....

Anyone else remember Sir Jimmy & Bob Wilson signing lyrics penned by Jimmy to the theme to Match of the Day...live on Match of the day.....

Bless you Jimmy.....you're a total living legend for so many reasons!!

Within seconds I had a text back with the answer. For anyone that knows Lionel it's unlikely he used Google!

Just asked my Grandad and he said straight away that Proud relates to Preston, Posh to Peterborough, Cobblers to Northampton and Oysters to Colchester. As others have said it may be a nickname that was still around from that period from the original club.

Proud Posh or Cobblers and the third name related to the team we where playing on that particular day.

Just spoke to Col U regarding the Ball boys/girls and asked this question too. It is them. They're still known as the Oyster men by some. It's something to do with an annual oyster festival.
