I was in Northampton yesterday on business and drove past a stadium which i'm not sure is sixfields or not. Maybe one of the regulars can tell me ?
It had a TGI fridays next to it and the area it was in didn't look as bad as expected ?

Thanks, not that i'm likely to go but it was just the impression I had in my mind it was not what I was expecting and the area and ground from the outside looked ok.

Theres a rugby stadium nearby. When I was on the train to the MK Dons game we stopped in Northampton and you could see the Rugby stadium near Shitfields

Correct Liam. The Saints rugby stadium is a 10 minute walk from the station (in the St James End area - hence the Saints). Sixfields a further 15 up the road from there. Sixfields is a retaill area on the edge of the town. Sixfields stadium is pretty souless, the Saints isn't - maybe because it is in the heart of the community and is surrounded by terraced housing

No definately not but it was different to the mental picture I had. Lets say the mental picture I had was like Milwall's old den and area..

Forget the hatred of the idea of playing there. The actual surroundings and ground is good.

I was also on the motorway yesterday and saw a fantastic stadium near a Tescos. Don't think it was Sixfields as it was about about 34 mile outside Northampton.

Where was that? I assume it wasn't the Ricoh as you can't see the Tesco from the motorway can you?

Were the car parks full? Apparently they are rammed every time someone on here passes by.

I live near Sixfields. It was built 20 years ago, and is a neat and tidy ground, suitable for a team that bounces between Divs 3 & 4. It has one double-decker stand and three single decks. The long single deck is being turned into a double decker as we speak - they want it ready for the new season and will increase capacity from 7,600 to 10,000.

The pitch is generally pretty good. I guess 2 teams playing there won't help the grass, but what I think's happening is that Cov fans are understandably angry and some try to rubbish the stadium their owners have moved them to. But that's not being at all fair - there's really nothing wrong with it. It's quite small, but so is NTFC. The Ricoh had 32,000 seats but when I watched my team play there only 11,000 were being sat in and the atmosphere was poor. Cobblers get about 5k most weeks - Cardoza is ambitious hence the 10k new capacity next year - but the team is poor and could be in the Conference by then...and that's not so easy to get out of again.

The point I would make is that the Council gave the club a 150 year lease for £1 a few years back...meaning they can keep all the pie money etc and indeed they're paying for the expansion by getting money from new hotels and houses being built on the surrounding land, which they also have the 150 year lease on. There's a whole lot more going on there than Sisu have done yet, let's put it that way. Maybe CCC could help CCFC in the way NBC helped NTFC?

The nearby Saints rugby club is much bigger. The 2 final corners are being filled in this summer, taking capacity from 15,000 to 17,000 - an impressive rugby stadium.

Aren't they a lovely fluffy council helping to protect a taxpayers asset?

Not all of the Northampton residents were pleased with the stadium being virtually given to the Cobblers. The Council have loaned central Govt funding for the expansion and hotel (same deal for the Saints - linked to the Enterprise Zone). Menwhile the team is hanging on to league status by its fingertips. The Sixfields area is decent enough - shame about the town centre, but give it time.

Well, the stadium was losing money (unlike ACL) so the council's argument was that it would save money by getting rid of the stadium for £1. Some people questioned it at the time, but it went through. NBC generally isn't popular in the town so it seems they've been trying hard to please people by helping the local football and rugby clubs, giving planning permission etc.

Anyway, I don't have much of a view, other than CCFC shouldn't be playing 35 miles from home, I just thought the OP might want some more info to his original question.

For the first time the other night I heard your whistle. So did the stewards. At one point they went racing out of the ground when City were attacking in the Second Half. Did they have a word with you?
