Carsley was an excellent player who often flew under the radar because he wasn't flash. Kept the game simple.

Good football brain, worked hard, good defensively and could really pick out a good forward pass.

Keane played brilliantly for us for 30 games, and more or less reproduced that at various clubs everywhere else he went in his career. What we got for those 30 games was essentially what a year of Robbie Keane gives you.

Dennis Wise had an insane run of 13 games at the twilight of his playing days where he produced at a rate that he never came close to over the entirety of his career. It was fun, but it was a total outlier, a flash in the pan, and if you replayed history, there's no way on earth he could ever do it again. Which is probably why he called it quits straight after, and why I wouldn't bet on him repeating the party trick for the purposes of this question.

I don't think you've read the original question. The OP made it very clear that we are judging players on their time with us and not their careers before or after. Short though his stay might have been Wise's impact on the team was huge and he was just the sort of player our team could do with right now. The likes of Hamer and O'Hare would benefit particularly.

As for talking in terms of Wise's career, and his time with us as being a flash in the pan, I presume you are talking purely in terms of goals return. Given that Wise played 15 years or so at the top level and was an influential captain to world renowned players like Desailly, Poyer, Zola and Vialli I would suggest you've also downplayed his playing career elsewhere anyway.

I hear you on your first point - I do think the team is sorely lacking experience, although I'm not convinced he's the best role model! Yes, he had a great career and was probably a good influence on the younger players, but the same is true for Joe Cole.

I won't labour the point as this is definitely my least popular City opinion (and I was a big fan of Eoin Jess). I just have a hard time believing that a 39 year-old midfielder who'd been bouncing around the Championship for four years is the best player we've ever had at that level. Even if he did play out of his skin for 13 games, in a way that he never did before or since.

It's been 20 years now. You can take 2 players from the ones we've had since being relegated from the Premiership (not in their prime but as we had them at the time) to add into the current team/squad who are you taking?

I'll start off with Wise and Armstrong.

Personally think the best player we’ve had since relegation was Warnock but we’ve already got more than enough decent full backs and just sent one of them out on loan. I’d probably take Thompson and Chippo. As good as Marosi has looked in the last year another that crossed my mind is a keeper. Best one of those we’ve had since the PL days is probably Fülöp.

1. Slightly left field but I'll go with Jack Cork - very accomplished on the ball, basically held our midfield together for half a season where everything else was going tits up. Think his contribution is overlooked slightly because of how poorly the team was doing under Coleman first half of that 09/10 season. Would improve our ball retention which has been an issue first few games this season

2. McGoldrick - as much as I like Godden this guy would be a serious upgrade. More pace, better link play, better finisher

Haven't seen this one mentioned, and as it's probably the position that we need/would improve us the most, I'm going to go with Bjarni Gudjonsson.

He was incredible for us under Eric Black in that attacking midfield role, and would fit into MR's style of play perfectly. Massive shame he got forced out, and his form dipped when we changed style of play after Black was sacked.

Second option would have to be Wilson, as I think we could do with the pace to stretch teams up top. Hopefully Tyler Walker will be able to add some of this when he gets going though.

I would say Hedman and Westwood were both better than him.

Can see why you’ve suggested that. Marshall too would be a candidate. We’ve been spoilt down the years in that department.

In the Prem we were spoilt with Oggy, Hedman & Kirkland.

Since relegation from PL we've had a real mix of terrific & terrible between the sticks though:

Westwood, Fülop, Marshall, Bywater & Murphy probably the pick but we've also had Shearer, Hyldgaard, Burge, Charles-Cook, Ince, Debec, Goram, Steele etc.

Aron Gunnarsson, Callum Wilson.

(edit) Actually, scrap Wilson for Scott Dann.

I would have to go for Dennis Wise first he showed us all what a top class player is all about second is more difficult, Marlon King had that touch of class too but as we know had baggage so l couldn’t go for him For the second choice I’d go for Aaron Gunnarsson how the bloody hell we didn’t get him on contract early Christ knows, Westwood the same.
