Big season for Shipley. Thought he was fantastic tail end of last year in his natural position. Huge work rate, a left foot to give us balance, strong defensively and scores goals.

We seem to pick up more results with him in the team (i think due to work rate and left peg/balance) I hope he gets games and stays with us longterm.

I think he is massively underrated as a player and prospect on here.

Hmmmm, not convinced personally. He had a great game against Sunderland but after that I thought he looked quite poor. Can’t see him getting ahead of any of Bayliss, Allen or Kelly.

A player a lot like to knock, important cog in the team imo, was excellent at the tail end of last season, as you say big season ahead for him.

On his day, good enough but needs to work on consistency

Always liked Shipley, decent technique and pops up with goals. Definitely not a winger but could fit in 433 quite nicely.

Looks like there's going to be a lot of speed on the pitch this season... Shipley isn't the quickest.. sooooo.......?

Unfortunately I don’t see where he fits in, right now, but I do think he can be quite useful. However, Bayliss leaving would change that and would give Shipley a change to convince Robins to play 4-3-3 even without TB.

Needs to work on his defensive duties, especially when players need tracking as they make runs from deep.
But he's a great player to have on the bench.

He can pick a pass too, which could suit us with quick wingers being played in behind the full backs. Won't start all the time, but over a long season, a lot of others won't, either. Hence the need for a strong squad

He’ll probably start the season on the bench if Bayliss stays. But, given the nature of the season, he’ll definitely get plenty of chances.

He did well at the tail end of last season, and has been a bit underrated.

He definitely isn't a starter with the current options but him Westbrooke and Eccles could well be the ideal back up players.

Reliable squad player, did superb as a wide midfielder (not a winger) in a narrow 4-4-2 in L2, impressed last season too in his favourite position.

I would have no qualms starting him.

But is he better than the 3 ahead of him currently?

Thing is, he’s probably not. But not by much. And I’d say we’ll need all these players for a long season. There were players that looked tired last season, if we can utilise the squad when that happens and be confident they won’t make us easier to beat, then that’s great.

I agree as a squad player to keep him however I would worry if he was a regular starter.

Shipley will do much better if we play the formation we did in the Friendly.

It suited him much more.

Behind Kelly and probably Allen (will reserve judgment) too.
Behind Bayliss in that central position based on last season alone?
No, on a par for me.

He is in my opinion nowhere near Kelly or Allens level. Bayliss on form is also far ahead of him.

Your opinion but you'd 'worry' if Shipley was a regular starter?
I wouldn't if played in his preferred position!
Perhaps we'll have to agree to disagree?

Im not too sure about Bayliss on form.

Play the same formation as we did in the friendly with the 2 in front of the sitting defender and I think Shipley will do better. Shipley scored the same as Bayliss in a lot less games too I think?

When he plays, he gets shots off. That was something the team as a whole struggled with last season. At least Shipley has a dig, and is usually on / close to target. That's where he adds a value that some of last seasons starters didn't imho.

If you honestly think Shipley is on a par with Bayliss then we will never agree

I expect a flurry of 3 million bids for Shipley soon then

I was only basing it on form for us alone rather than potential.

We haven't had any 3m bids for Bayliss yet...

He’s definitely good enough for L1.

I felt for him last year as until the last few games, I can’t remember him playing in his favoured position. He looks a much better player in the middle than out wide.

Technically he is quite good, he can pick a pass and will hold his position. However, he needs to work on his defensive game, both in the tackle and tracking players.

He’ll be an important player and I’d have no concerns seeing him alongside a Kelly/Allen in a two or alongside them both in a three. However he wouldn’t start ahead of those two or Bayliss. While Bayliss has some of the same defensive flaws, his ability to change a game is better than Shipley’s.

Cant remember seeing Shipley linked with a host of premier league teams however. Even on form id still have Bayliss over Shipley.
Id start Westbrooke ahead of him too

You keep saying on form, on form says Shipley as he had better stats and Bayliss had pretty bad form.

In your opinion. If you genuinely believe he should start over Bayliss then I give up

I rate him

10 goals from him this season if he plays 40 games. Nailed on.

If you read my previous post re. Bayliss vs Shipley in their favourite positions last season alone, then Shipley was on a par if not better than bayliss considering goals and assists in fewer games.

Also, you mention an 'on form' Bayliss!? That rarely happened last season and Shipley was far more consistent.

You are saying "on form", which is my point.

Do you get what form is?

For me he adds important depth and versatility to our midfield. We need a squad of players who are all going to have to play their part if we are to be successful and when the inevitable injuries happen aswell.

Want to see maybe a bit more consistency as he has shown that he can be a real asset when on his game.

I can definitely see Shipley being understudy to Kelly, and Bayliss understudy for Allen if MR plays both wingers.
Westbrook may well be one that goes out on loan.
Either way it's good to have some strength in depth and genuine competition for places in midfield.
