Can’t believe that a Prem team would be in for him, don’t they know that our PPG when he plays is marginally lower than when he doesn’t? What are they playing at?!

Think they had a similar bid for Kelly turned down, so have gone for the next best option

Sheaf going wouldn’t be insurmountable, but going at this point in the year would IMO rule out a push for top two this year which is a realistic (albeit lofty) ambition.

It doesn’t matter who you bring in this late in pre-season, we’d be looking at January at the earliest before they are properly bedded in, and given our recent early season records and the existing set of players we’re trying to get integrated, that would be a step too far for us to really challenge at the top end of the table.

That being said, if he wants to go then it’s not so easy as just refusing. You don’t want a player - consciously or not - nursing himself through to the next transfer window in the hopes of securing his move. I’m just hoping we have this sorted for the sake of this summer, and if he then goes next year for less money then so be it. I’d rather have a really good go in this weaker division and sacrifice some spending power than cash in now and very likely end up with a weaker team in the short-term.

Sheaf has played 11 min of pre season TBF, it’s not like we aren’t used to him not starting in this system.

If we sold him but signed two CM’s and a first choice LB & a back up RB with the money I’d be happy enough with that.

Sheaf I imagine could command a fee of £15m + and probably wages of about £30-40k in the Premier League. If that's the case he has outgrown the club.

As others have said if he goes we need to reinvest the money. Which I believe we would. The funds could enable us to bring in 4 real quality players.

the season starts in 5 days though...

top half of the pitch we're absolutely sorted, but our defence is the biggest concern and if we lose Sheaf now it adds more pressure to that and means we need a replacement to walk in and be up to scratch immediately...big risk

Not starting games in pre-season and not having him in actual games isn’t the same though, and the loss of institutional, tactical and cultural knowledge of the club that leaves when he does doesn’t do so when he is injured or off on his jollies. I don’t doubt we can survive without him, I just don’t think we can be as good with someone else at this point in the preparations.

It would be hugely disappointing were he to go, for he is, in my opinion, far and away the most important player in the squad. However, you really can't really blame the lad, he deserves the opportunity to test himself at the highest level, although it will be a massive blow to our promotion aspirations. I know that no one player is irreplaceable but to get someone in with as much ability and ready to go will not be easy. We will have to trust the process...

I'm hoping this is just talk because I think we finally have a balanced, settled side. Cover in almost all positions and we're looking stronger that I can ever remember.

Doug has shown he is no fool when it comes to getting the best deal. He has 2 years left, if we don't get what we want, we can just walk away. I think Sheaf is a model professional, who will know if we don't go up this year. We'll have no choice next summer but to sell.

Sheaf is my favourite player, I think he's far and away our best player, but I also think the prospect of having £15m to spend on 2 CMs could make us legitimate title challengers. And I have never trusted our recruitment team more to find the right players.

Target 1 has to be Adem Zorgane for me.

So over four years that is £12 million. Doesn't leave much for transfer fees if we get £15 million for Sheaf.

It’s the circle of life. Established Prem team comes in and signs our best player. At £15-20m you can’t complain because it balances our books and we can complete our remaining business this summer.

With that extra money, we can probably look to bring in a 1-2 additional players we probably weren’t going to bring until next summer.

If he goes we need to replace him with proven quality. We've got a massive squad now and I don't want anymore fringe players. If we get 15 million for him, id hope we spend 6-7 million on a ready made replacement that is better than what we currently have.

Agree. If we sign Bobby Clarke on loan and spend 7 million on a LB we could cover the loss of sheaf but I really think we need to keep him. Our 3 of Rudoni, Sheaf and Torp/Eccles is creative and will get and set up goals. To be at the top of the league you need to have more than a few who are premier league standard. I think we have a few and need to add 1 or 2 more and not sell Sheaf who on his day is the best of them.

I really like Sheaf but he does miss big spells of the season at times. If we can replace well it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Would still rather he stayed though.

We will absolutely have 2-3 lined up as potential replacement for Sheaf. I'd be happy with 15m and to then invest in a replacement, another CB and RB.

Sheaf won't sign a new contract and he will always miss a good chunk of games through injury.

He won’t go unless the asking price is met. If so another big pay day for us and it’s doesn’t effect promotion for me. Window shuts in a month. We will get more quality in. It’s a cycle we are in.
