Completely agree. Even yesterday someone suggested his pass completion is only high because he does Sammy clingan type passes, which is complete nonsense. He always looks for the forward pass first, and rarely goes back or sidewards, only doing so when he has no options or movement infront of him.

Exactly. He's literally in the Top 5% of the league for forward passes.

Hamer though! 20% progressive passes and close to 50 passes a game!

Still can’t believe there were actually some going on about Kelly going straight back into the side to replace Sheaf hahah.

He has been doing it all season. His numbers for winning the ball back & progressing it are exceptional, literally among the best in the league. I've always maintained people just didn't understand the type of player he is.

We’re fortunate to have two CM with a great range of passing who are also adept at breaking up opposition attacks. That’s probably been vital to our success this season.

It’s a shame many had their opinion of Sheaf clouded by the fact he gave the ball away sitting deep a few times last season because he clearly had bags of quality as well.

Fewer passes & quite a bit less accurate than Sheaf but a bit more progressive.
They're a great combination.

That graphic also shows what most think about Allen too, simple & effective but nowhere near as influential.

I do struggle with any “data” which has Hyam as the third best centre back in the league

Imagine how good he will be next season now he's settled in this league! And we have Eccles as back up too.

That's using his model which weights certain characteristics higher than others to try & find a specific type of Centre Back. Because of Hyam's role for us he does a lot of progressing the ball so scores highly.

Actually even more than that now. He averages 100.2 passes per game. Swansea as a team average over 600.

To be fair you need a mix in a team, he should have done 2 categories - best progressive centre backs, and the best defensive centre backs

Thanks, No McFadzean or Rose. I think you're right in your earlier post that its the role Hyam plays, being right sided centre back and your natural pass is forward and wide to the wingback.

Unless I misunderstood it, the flaw in his recent rankings is CBs playing in 2 vs a back 3. The wide CBs in a 3 have quite a different role, especially in possession, and will have more emphasis on ball carrying and progressive passing so weighting certain characteristics higher than others gives an unfair advantage to those playing left or right in a 3.

Yeah absolutely, although hardly anyone in the Championship seems to play with a back 4 much now. Your assessment is spot on (as usual) though. It's funny because last season Fadz as the centre of the 3 played more progressive passes than the wider pair which is unusual but part of our style of play at the time. That's been flipped on its head since & obviously the centre of the 3 is unlikely to do much at all in the way of progressive runs. As I alluded to earlier, Hyam comes out of it well as he's given so much opportunity to do so by our tactics.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a flaw as such though as he specifically states that is the profile of player he's looking for. If he wanted he could tweak the weightings to give more credence to aerial duels etc. to alter the profile.

Extra impressive when you consider he’s only played about three quarters of games compared to Lewis Travis.

Think he will be with us after O'Hare and hamer have moved on and been replaced,as he is becoming the complete midfielder.

Vital cog in our first team it’s up to Robins to recruit players of similar ilk to go with him. I would like him to be a little more goal minded and have more pots at goal, I’m sure there are goals there.
