Several dead in multi-vehicle crash in Birmingham - Six people dead in Birmingham crash

Really sad. Anyone know the area at all? Can't say I have ever driven down there.

Christ, that's awful.

Was it a pile up or something?

just heard. Happened at 1am in Edgbaston so I'd imagine more likely two vehicles but that's just me guessing.
Edit - didn't see the link Otis put up. Multi vehicle. Terrible thing to happen.
Bristol rd is a busy road but still surprised at the amount of vehicles involved at that time of morning.

i would say as someone who works in Birmingham, (and I appreciate this may have nothing to do with this incident), that they are by far the worse drivers I have encountered in the UK.
Even the pedestrians are lethal.

I know that stretch of road very well. It's dual carriageway for most of the 7 miles out to Longbridge (apart from short stretches through places like Edgebaston and Selly Oak). Can't understand how so many were involved? Very sad.

Awful news, RIP to those involved.

I know those roads very well. Most of the junctions and roundabouts in that area (especially Holloway Circus) can be horrendous, especially in rush hour.

Apparently a car crossed the central reservation.

Very sad news. Someone must have been driving like idiot, and lots seem to have not been wearing seatbelts.

Awful way to go, and feel for their friends and family.

I thought that about seat belts if they all came out the car, thoughts to emergency services too

They'll probably turn out to be bunch of drunk teenagers in a race with another car.

Quote: "There were four men in the third car, and all had been thrown from the vehicle, the ambulance spokesman said."

That means they were not wearing seat belts.
Your chances of surviving an accident if you are ejected from a vehicle are virtually zero. Always wear your seat belt.

Apparently photos of the scenes are doing the rounds. Who ever's responsible for that should be jailed.

Yep.

I was a witness to an old lady being hit by a car down Stoney Stanton Road last week. First thing on my mind was to see if she was alright (a group quickly came out of houses, so I stood back. Pointless there being 20 people stood round her). Next on my mind was 999 and to wait for the police. Never even crossed my mind to video the scene. Not for a single second.

The only two reasons I can think of for people wanting to video stuff like this is, 1) to sell the footage to a media company e.g. Sky News. and 2) to post on their Facebook/Instagram/Twitter page to show how sick they are to their mates.

No idea.

I am guessing she was. I checked the papers and the net and couldn't find anything.

It was a stupid driver. One car coming from town past the Coventry Health Centre and the other car waiting to turn right from Stoney Stanton Road in the other direction.

Only one car coming from town, no queue, but instead of waiting until the car from town had driven past, the car waiting to turn right thought it a good idea to cut in and turn right BEFORE the car had past. In cutting the corner he had to speed up and he did miss the car by about 1 second, but an old Asian lady was crossing the road (probably from the health centre) and this car ran straight into her and threw her up in the air.

All for not waiting just a couple more seconds.

I've seen the pictures and they are horrendous, I think they should show them on TV to shock people into not drink driving, racing, etc.

One of the photos, a young lad has been ejected and there's just a massive streak of blood where he's slid down the road.

100% agree, problem with younger people in this particular era is that they are so bombarded with fantasy ( not their fault) that they lose touch with reality. And sadly there isn't anything more real than this. I'd make every boy racer in a suped up piece of shit driving twice the speed limit watch it on loop

It was an S3 with a drug dealer as one of them who was locked up for dangerous driving on a police chase. I know it might be judging it based on that but it doesn't sound promising.

So No speed info published yet, but a hot hatchback has crossed over to the other carraigeway, it's occupants have been ejected from the vehicle and three occupants of the taxi were wiped out.
There was space for a barrier between the carriageways but nothing installed.

Even on the Aston Expressway where they have the signs to change how many lanes each way, if he a car is driving silly and loses control and flys into oncoming traffic it isn't going to be pretty.

Isn't the Aston expressway one of the safest roads?

It might be, just if somebody was driving silly on there and lost control it would be carnage.

True, it's just the sheer amount of traffic on that one and the no central reservation. Like you say though, if somebody is hammering it and loses it it is going to be messy. At least on a road with central reservation it limits it a bit.

With the accident it looks like there is a kerb type of thing, hit that at speed and you will take off

I work on the Pershore Road, about half a mile from the scene. Underspass where the accident happened is near the central Mosque - it's part of a large ring road and though its supposed to be 40, that stretch would run for probably a mile before you hit any traffic lights, so dare say a lot of people get carried away. Dunno if there are speed cameras there, but if not, there should be. Tragic for the taxi driver and his passengers.

Am surprised about the lack of pile ups on the Aston Expressway - thats a 50 zone and they don't have any barriers between the roads (its a blank lane, which you can use in rush hours) though there was a big incident years ago when a motorbike used that lane and the drain collapsed.

I think it's fairly safe to judge based on that, wankers driving a wankers car like a wanker. Such a shame for the cabbie and two passengers.
