Yep. I think I posted the other day. Keane would have cost a wage while he was here, I'd guess in the region of £15k p/w for a year. We saw nothing of the transfer fee from Inter.

I am also not sure if we paid interest on the £6m that was put up for his transfer fee for that year. Who knows?

We paid 6 million to Wolves and sold him to Inter for 13million after 1 season if I remember right. Don't think there were any losers in that deal. Do you ?

Well strong rumours at the time were Inter were always going to buy him and we got the cash to "test him out" in the prem first. When he did so well they snapped him up. He was never our player. A bit like the Jarni deal to get around his ban on a transfer to Madrid. We were full of "creative" transfer techniques back then. Whelan was bought by a transfer speculator (director?) as well IIRC.

Problem was we still paid the wages.

He must've been on a wedge. Had a house in Balsall Common and a Limo pick him up for training each day cos he couldn't drive.

I thought that he was signed under Richardson's genius scheme whereby investors would loan the money for purchases in return for reaping any profits when they were sold on? Certainly the rumour at the time was that pressure was put on the club to cash in by said investors once they knew the money we could get for him. Dangerously close to 3rd party ownership of course, so I'm sure it didn't happen at all...Richardson, dodgy? No chance..

A variation on my conspiracy :claping hands:

I'm struggling to remember who was rumoured to be the main "funder" of Keane, but he certainly wasn't Italian.

All of which proves what we don't want in a business plan. Can't say I blame Richardson etc. he was a small time businessman playing international jet setter and it got to his head, he wasn't the only one. We're all complicit in wanting bigger signings and enjoying the outcomes. Without any actual cash to invest these schemes must have seemed like mana from heaven.

It's one of the reasons I remain suspicious of any board that shrouds large scale changes in the clubs financial direction in secrecy. Whether that's sudden investment in the team or building a stadium.

I heard a rumour way back then that money was being loaned to the club (e.g. by the bank, Co-op wasn't it?) on the basis that it was guaranteed by the value of certain players. No idea how the money would have been repaid if the payments had stopped although demanding the sale of those players would have been the obvious route. No idea how true that is though.

At the time Keane went did we not get a couple of Italian players on loan with a view to being a feeder club, testing ground, taking players on a regular basis, maybe wrong, vague memories! All done as part of the Keane deal?

The keane scenario sounds identical to now.
An unknown investor pays the players wages when we sign him for free or a nominal fee.
If he does well he will be sold for a profit.
If its ok now why was it an issue back then.
When we were doing it in the big league.

Nii Lamptey show anchor. I find him to be very good host and a decent guy when I've spent any time with him on away trips. We don't nessersarly share the same views on everything but he always puts a balanced view forward on air.
