Still young, so plenty of time to add some consistency and improe his defensive play.

He's faded badly this season though (overplaying, as Pugh was past-it/injured more than expected?)

His early career, though, has gone a similar way to Andy Whing's, who also burst on the scene as an attacking full-back, a breath of fresh air in a dour side managed by an angry Scottish manager. He tailed off though, and although he still had the odd moment (last goal at HR!) was never as good as that first 20 game spell when he played with little fear.

So... is Haynes the next Andy Whing, or is there more to him than that?

with him its confidence, I think at the start of the season in the first 5 home games ( 3 of which were at Northampton) he was excellent, ironically playing as a wing back, he scores against Peterborough then comes the game that changed everything, Worcester City at home.... If you look since that game he hasn't been the same player! Pressley's outburst maybe had a bigger effect on him than any other player as he hasn't been the same since!

Personally id like to see the new manager try and work with him and get his confidence up! It could mean a month away on loan or it could be an arm round him and a few words in his ear to say your a good player lad etc....

Andy Whing was ok for he has had a decent career in league 1 and and League 2 i would say unfairly treated at times with us, i seem to remember a pen against Leeds for hand ball was the last straw for him with us!

Good question......I'd like to think he won't be the next Andy Whing, but you really never know. He's got a lot of good attributes, fairly quick, good left foot, tall, can go past a man......but like you said the bread and butter of being a fullback is being able to defend.

I think wingback suited him as there was always the extra centre back to cover him, he really started to get exposed at left back, both 1-1 defending and on the cover.

There is maybe a lot to be said for that, his first game showed he feels the pressure more than many!

Remember Haynes is a rookie and having to learn his trade in a pressure situation with other rookies and some just not good enough, with the right manager (Mowbray ?) I think he could be come a real player. I think fans expect far too much from these kids as they did with Christie, Clarke and Wilson. Was speaking to Christie the other week and he told me the biggest difference at Derby is it is the first time in his career he has a settled team around him so there's a different type of pressure.

I think he's a better wing back than a full back tbh......so he's future may depend a little on new managers formation plans.....only other option
would be to move him up to left mid/wing which I am undecided about as a good idea tbh.

I did not like the 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 as you wish but Haynes was one player who benefitted from this formation.

As someone has pointed out Whing has had a decent league career as well so has not done too badly really.

Haynes is over 6 foot, great left peg and has ability, Pressley should take a long hard look at the way he handled the kid with the right manager he will be a good player, put it like this if I was managing a championship team and knowing how we sell players at the drop of a hat I would be in for Haynes like a shot.

tbf, he also had him playing well at the start of the season.

It's conceivable that the whole cunning plan was supposed to be Pugh playing most of this season with Haynes picking up a few games, next season seeing their roles reversed, before Haynes became first choice the season after that.

Which wouldn't have been a bad plan really.

The only problem with that plan was... Pugh!

I was asking why we started Stokes rather than Haynes before he scored yesterday. But I have to say Stokes really impressed me. And there must be a reason why Haynes isn't playing. They wouldn't drop him for no reason

Micky Adams is Scottish?!? That's news to me! And seeing as he signed him for Brighton, he obviously wasn't that angry at Whing.

Well, Whing may have dropped down into the lower divisions-but we're already there now! I think Haynes is more skillful than Whing was, but Whing was a better defender-but I'm thinking about the player he was by the time he was about 22-23, not 19 like Haynes is still.

Haynes is very young still and has plenty of time to learn defensively. The people saying he'd be better on the wing were probably the same ones saying the same about Cyrus, who will never be a winger and is doing just fine as an attacking FB the division above us. And in most well managed sides, full-backs are attacking players as much as defenders. I don't think most FB's can adapt to midfield as it's a very different position with a lot less of the play in front of you. Bale did it, but he looked slightly out of position at LB from day one.

I do hope that he never gets played on the wrong side due to injuries; Whing at LB was one of the more excruciating sights as a City fan, up there with Hall at RB!

I think Haynes will be just fine and we need to remember how young he is. This is his first full season, one of utter mayhem on and off the pitch, hardly the ideal learning environment. He'll come back stronger next season. And then we'll sell him.

The vast majority of his games for us were under Adams. I also remember McAllister mainly as being depressed that season, rather than angry...

That does not stop him bursting on the scene as an attacking full-back, a breath of fresh air in a dour side managed by an angry Scottish manager.

He went downhill from the point Black came in, as much because the system wasn't then set up to maximise his strengths, and rather showed his weaknesses.

Adams also liked signing Trevor Benjamin after he'd played for him previously, but you wouldn't put that as a ringing endorsement of Benjamin's prior performances under Adams.

He's not playing because he is not very good.

Well no - Christie clearly had his head turned and it affected his game. However he had played in a struggling championship team for a season and had very many good games at that level.

Defensively Haynes is poor - his positional sense is non existent and ultimately he is riding on the back of 20 good minutes against Gillingham -?he was poor in the second half in that game and Johnson got him out if jail.

I've nothing against him but I don't get the massive over reaction to him compared to the ridicule Thomas and Finch get.

Most games this season he has been very very poor.

good going forward - delivers a good ball, but poor defensively

his positioning and tackling are not at the standard of a forest green reserve player

But will work well in a 3 5 2

It probably is worth pointing out Thomas was wearing the Emperor's new clothes not so long ago.

Now personally I don't think Thomas is as awful as many claim. I also think part of the reason he's current scapegoat is because we weren't as realistic about his strengths and weaknesses when he was younger.

There's still time for Thomas, and Haynes, to develop into fine players... but it's probably going to help them do so if we're realistic about the areas they need to work on. Then it doesn't come as a surprise later down the line.

Overhyped to fuck mainly due to crossing the ball three/four times in the Gillingham game on Sky. The real prospect is Aaron Phillips at RB, defensively (barring MK's goal on Saturday) sound, accomplished on the ball and decent in attack (A goal threat too).
