Newcastle manager Steve Bruce shocked by effect of Covid on players

  • Two first-team players could be out for several more weeks
  • ‘It’s frightening when you think they’re young, fit athletes’

Newcastle will not name those individuals affected by Covid on grounds of medical confidentiality.

Steve Bruce said two Newcastle United first-team players remain seriously unwell with Covid-19 and could be out for several more weeks, if not months.
Whereas the majority of Bruce’s squad have recovered from the team’s recent coronavirus outbreak, Newcastle’s manager said “four or five” were still sidelined by the virus. “For a couple of them it’s had a damaging effect,” he added. “It won’t be a week or two [that they’re out], it will be longer than that.

“It’s not just fatigue, they’ve got other symptoms too. It washed over most of them but some are finding it a struggle. My thoughts are with the two players [worst affected] and their welfare.”

Bruce has been shocked to see such super-fit footballers floored by Covid. “It’s frightening when you think they’re young, fit and supreme athletes,” he said. “If anybody needs reminding of how serious this is, then we have witnessed it. Some of them seem all right but then the fatigue element hits them, but for two it’s beyond that. They’re still going to take weeks to get back; you wouldn’t think that this long Covid thing is possible in fit, young athletes.”
Newcastle will not name those individuals afflicted on grounds of medical confidentiality but Bruce has seen his squad experience a wide range of symptoms and degree of illness. “We’ve had the full set,” he said. “We’ve had vomiting, sores, mouth ulcers, no smell, no taste. The fatigue element is a big problem. For the vast majority who had it, fatigue is the one thing the virus leaves. They go for a walk for half an hour and then want to go back to bed. It’s as brutal as that. It’s been a really difficult couple of weeks. It’s extremely difficult to manage.”

That article is from two years ago though, from what was I presume a struggling Newcastle side. As you say, different variant and a lot of people have more immunity now etc. It just seems to me like this is typical football. As you say, no one really knows the extent of it, but surely if it had been a problem recently, Robins would have said so, even without naming names?

My question more is, are any of our squad currently struggling with after covid affects to this day. If yes, fair enough. I am just not sure we can keep using that line without any real evidence. It gets used over and over on here and we have enough deflections for people´s favourite players not performing as it is!

He never puts a run of form together either through injuries or gaffs. Without looking at the stats I would say he plays about 50% of the time and he's subpar in 50% of those games. In other words he has about 10 good games a season. I would cut him loose I think, especially if we can make some money on him (but he's never going to PL).

I definitely believe Waghorn has been affected, he just seems to have lost a bit of that extra burst of power

Id imagine some are and some aren't.
I know people who have shrugged it off straight away and others who have struggled. No reason to think our players are any different.

Someone like Rose has come back and had to go straight into the side because of a lack of depth. In that respect, regardless of how he's suffered or otherwise, he's no different to anybody who's suffered a strain, a pull, or anything else in that it wouldn't necessarily be fair to expect him to be up to speed instantly and, with a bigger squad, we'd be easing him in more gently in all likelihood, which would probably help his form long-term as well.

Not now Bidwell is there TBH. But still miles ahead of Hyam and Fadz. Hyam seems to get a free pass thiugh.

According to the Godden / O'Hare Q&A a little while back they said he was one of the quickest at the club - something we lack. He generally is a decent passer but had an off game yesterday in that department. He was excellent in the match at Southampton so he is a capable player. As has been posted he has had a torrid time with injuries and hasn't really had an extended run. I think he should do whatever Hyam did pre-season re strengthening as he has seemed (apart from last night v Davis) much stronger than last year.

I liked his suggestion that we sell O’hare for 10 mil then buy Swift, who has more goals and assists, for 5 mil.

Don't think any of our centre backs show much of that. Possibly Salter now and again .

Thought Rose’s goal versus Reading was good. I kind of rate him. Maybe the Prem team will look at his “header” versus Luton at home and change their minds.

Might prove to be wrong but personally I think one of the things we have learnt over the last few weeks is that Rose isn't good enough. Has made at least one mistake in most games. Concentration seems to let him down. Major problem for a defender and I'm not sure it's something you can coach.

I don’t think Premier League clubs go for fourth choice centre halves at mid table Championship clubs no matter how hard their representatives try

Rose hasn't been as good this season but I suspect a lot of that is not having a settled run in the team. MR seems to prefer Hyam in the right sided roll. and he isn't going to displace a fit and in-form McFadz or a natural left sided player with the quality of JCS.
I still think there is a very good player in there.

Harsh to judge someone’s ability on the few games post covid TBH. He played some shocking balls out but no less than Hyam. Like Bidwell at LCB, I’d be looking for two others to join him in the summer and get a LWB in.
I think Bidwell is more suited to CB than LWB, I think if he gets a bit more muscle on and trains at heading he will be a top CB for us

If anything he looks too heavy to me

I don't believe he's the answer at centre back, he's too small and thus vulnerable to the long diagonal ball

LOL, this thread has turned bizarre. From a random caller to a post match talk show * , it's now turned to either Rose doesn't want to play for us, he's no good or he's the best of a bad bunch, noone would want him.

Some opinions are worthy of healthy debate. Others are nothing more than troll material. From the regular consensus about the caller's point of view, I would definitely park this in the troll pile and move on to something more worthwhile.

* yes, I know Nick from Brum is almost preselected by CWR but he's still as far from ITK as anyone here barring betterdays and SkyBlueBeliever. Anyone taking his comments as fact are somewhat deluded.
