England striker Wayne Rooney's ban for the Euro 2012 Championship has been reduced to two matches from three after an appeal to Uefa in Switzerland.

He was punished after being sent off for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic during a 2-2 draw with Montenegro in October.

Rooney, 26, will now be available for England's third Group D game, against joint hosts Ukraine, but will miss the fixtures against France and Sweden.

The third match of his ban has been suspended for four years.

A Uefa spokesman told BBC Sport the third game ban would kick in only if he is sent off for violent conduct in another European Championship match.

"The ban applies only to national team competition governed by Uefa," said the spokesman.

Good news but the FA are hypocrites. Had he done that in the PL he'd have got an automatic 3 match ban, and if he had appealed they'd have extended it to 4 matches.

I disagree.

Firstly, it shows that the FA will look the other way if a player is good enough and that's a bad place to go. Telling future stars that its okay to stamp on someone, kick them, swear your head off and when you get sent off "don't worry, if you're good enough we'll appeal!".
Secondly, when it gets to the third game the whole "Do we play him" debate will arise and go on untill he does actually play and does frack all then people will get on his back and he'll say something stupid like "Nice to hear your own fans boo you".

I think they've reduced the ban to make sure Capello takes him on the grounds he'll probably do it again and he hasn't scored for 3 months anyway.

In fairness, a 3 match ban in a 38 game-long Premier League season does not compare to a 3 game ban in a 8/10 game qualifying campaign, or indeed a 3-6 game long tournament. Three games is three games yes, but it's also anywhere from 50% to 100% of England's tournament, as opposed to 7-8% of a normal Premier League season. I reckon 2 games is about right.

Agreed. He's a time bomb waiting to go off, and he hasn't the brains to learn from it and to not allow it to happen again.

He was performing again last week, kicking out in a fit of temper. Does anybody trust this man child not to blow up again at the Euro's?
