His record was an still improvement on the season before though, once again in a higher division.

He was also part of a team that, relative to the overall quality of each respective league, was significantly weaker than the squad he was playing in during the season prior.

I feel like his most likely destination at this point is going back to Rotherham if their poor form continues.

So his 11 goals mean what on the grand scheme when he scored 4 the season after for the same team ? Then had a relatively slow first season at Ipswich too .

This is particularly evident the way Simms and Wright were randomly rotated out of the squad at times. It seemed random on occasion

He scored 11 goals in the championship the season after he left us which was an improvement. We made a profit on him too, so it’s a successful transfer.

As Robins said, right player, right club, wrong time. He’d have been quality in the year we went up from L1.

I don't disagree it was a succesful transfer , he was just here too early in his career in hindsight

First season at Ipswich was a strange one for all involved largely due to Paul Cook playing FIFA Career mode and bringing in 20 players that summer, including 5 first team strikers, on top of the 3 that were already at the club.

So he only actually started 24 times.

He played 1200 more minutes in the Championship. His minutes per goal was higher at Barnsley than with us.

Precisely. I just wished we could’ve kept him that season we went up.

Have to say I was a little gutted when Chaplin went. Obviously this led to the Godden signing (who was immense) but I would of liked them both. We beat Southend on the opening game (before Godden came in) and our forward options were Biamou, Hiwuula & Bakayoko! Robins worked wonders with Vic, Max, McNulty etc, but there were plenty of forwards he couldn't get a tune out of. Chaplin, Clarke-Harris, Tyler Walker, Waghorn.

I think Chaplin and Walker are interesting examples. They were chased for a period of time but then when we got them we didn't play to their strengths. With longer term targets you would expect to pivot the team to play to their strengths or if they weren't going to fit into the system abandon the chase rather than sign the player.
Not every player we sign will be a success and amount of money spent on a player cannot guarantee success.
It is a case of identify how you want your team to play. Identify weaknesses in the system. Search for players who will improve those weaknesses and try to sign them.
Would argue over this season Robins couldn't settle on best system or best eleven, meaning difficult to decide what you are actually recruiting for.

Always found it strange how MR couldn't get the most of of players he had supposedly been tracking for ages.

Could arguably add Kitching to that list as he seemed to very keen on getting him.

Anyone think Robins might go to Reading with Selles leaving? They're a bit of a basket case like we were when he took over. We all know Robins can make the best out of a bad situation. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, I haven't read the whole thread.

No, too far South for him to travel. Must be within a 50 mile radius of his house in Derbyshire allegedly.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I guess if it's a bigger job than Reading he might consider it. I guess he hopes Derby go on a nose dive then

MR was very keen to sign vik too according to boddy .. not sure that pulling 4 or 5 players from the long list we've signed in 7/8 years is of any relevance overall when you consider how succesful a period it's been

Robins probably won't work again this season. Doug will still be paying him so it's going to need a hefty offer to get him working again. The rest will do him good.

It’s just an insane take on a period that produced £40m or so profit for the club, and two promotion teams. We’ve probably wasted more on one Austin signing than 4 years of Badlan ones.

It’s been two years I’ll get over it. But with the window coming up and the transfer kitty running dry it’s a pertinent conversation as to whether our Head of Recruitment could recruit an arse out of an elbow lineup.
