So perhaps his absence from the team wasn't entirely form/ability-related, as I'd thought.

Did you not think that someone may have been down town this morning, holding an umbrella in one hand, so they only had one hand free, and with the rain, only been able to read the thread title only and not be able to open it up to read the thing properly and therefore only read that Vincenti has a drug problem, so that following reading that they then might well have told their parents, who they were with at the time, who then in turn went home and told Joyce and David next door, who then told their sons etc.?

Did you not consider that scenario?
