Setting us up not to concede went a long way towards us underachieving last season

Sheaf is the only player who can receive the ball from the defence with his back to goal and turn with it. Allen Eccles and Torp can't. Hamer was good at it too.

If we base the table off 1st half only last season , we see a clear problem with how we are approaching games

Compared to if we show how we played second half

Granted we conceded second half against stoke , but the fact is we are starting off games poorly and it cannot be happening for another season

I was thinking about this today. What is the clubs identity footballing wise under robins. Since our possession based system in league one. I’d argue we’ve been a stronger counter team but seemingly every window we look to become a possession team like last year. Wonder why we don’t stick with a high counter identity.

Apparently, we have the full Statsbomb package. The 1st thing the recruitment team need to do in the morning is to enter a search query for 'Midfield Enforcer'. We have no aggression in the midfield and we're far too easy to play through. Until that's sorted, forget promotion.

Sheaf was in the top 98 or 99% of ball winning and interceptions in the championship last season. He is the ‘enforcer’.

I said this multiple times last season, without Sheaf in midfield we look a lot worse. In fairness, Eccles didn’t start the game but you’d expect him to really step up this season in any Sheaf absences (and others ofc).

Think Robins will be frustrated. Not been allowed to make his own signings nor has he been provided with improvements on last years starting 11.

Having lost his 2 captains and right hand man coupled with unrealistic expectations from the ownership and fan base, I don’t anticipate he will still be here by the end of the season. Which is incredibly sad and I think our fans will need to be careful what they’ve wished for

How do you get 98, 99%?
He played in 31 out of 46 games last season. That can't help.

I mean on the expectations, while fans have been a bit optimistic like myself. The board are asking for play offs. Robins has been and is probably the best manager this club has had in a long long time but after all the money spent if we can’t get sixith. You do have to ask the question.

There’s a few sources, I might be out a % on tackles and probably over egged his interceptions.

You're right that Torp was poor, but surely he missed most of the pre-season with some kind of groin injury?

Or is he a bit precious? January is a terrible time to join a club. Any professional footballer will tell you that. He also had the I hadn't trained for five weeks problem, and was behind fitness wise. But he has now had a full pre season with us. I hope he is not going to be a player full of excuses? Allen has faults but is prepared to grasp the nettle, prepared to fail. For me whenever I have seen Torp starts he fails to integrate himself into the game. He only shows promise off the bench. Considering Torp was so poor, for whatever reason? It is interesting Robins put him out into the media interviews.

A message perhaps you can't hide, take responsibility? Talk to the fans about that team performance and our aspirations?

I don't want any signing to fail. But it is a big season for him now. He has to step up and show he deserves to be picked every week. Otherwise he is in danger of being just remembered for scoring the goal that never was at Wembley. Let's face it if it wasn't at Wembley we would have forgotten about it now.

Sorry, I don't disagree with a lot of what you say, but as I said before he really didn't have a full pre-season. He was sidelined with an injury for a good chunk of it.

Difficult to know how much that contributed to his performance on Saturday, which I agree was much too quiet.

They must have deemed him match fit to start him? Also there were rumours pre season (I have no idea whether they were true or not) that he was shying away from training?

It's one match, but this season he needs to show he can perform consistently at this level.

Torp can do this too. We've seen him do it a couple of times in a city shirt, but he did it a fair bit for Sarpsborg too. Feels like he's just playing a little within himself at the moment. Obviously that could go either way, but I have a real hope that he will really come on this season.

The defensive part of his game is the best bit. He generally mops up a lot and makes us more solid. Certainly more than Torp or Allen. His problem is going forwards though. So, so, wasteful. Barely ever scores, didn't get a single assist last season either, and casually passes it across the final attacking third without real conviction, occasionally getting intercepted.

If we could just anchor him in our own half and let other players attack, we might have a winning formula.

I agree.

I think that way we would get the best out of him and we have enough creative/attacking players not to need him for that but we desperately need him to help protect our back line.
