Frank Lampard planning Premier League raid for ex-Arsenal defender

FRANK LAMPARD wants to add Rob Holding to his Coventry City squad this summer. The former Arsenal star is currently on the fringes at Crystal Palace after falling out with manager Oliver Glasner. H…
www.thesun.co.uk

No football played in over a year owing to injuries and then a fall-out with Oliver Glasner after he took over Palace where he stripped him of his squad number and made him train with the kids

That being said, a decent pedigree before that nearly 100 Premier League apps for Arsenal

Would bring good experience but imagine would take a hefty salary home

He's played in the cup a few times and plays U21 games so he's not completely frozen out, I'd take him to be honest..

He has made just one senior appearance for Palace since he joined them last summer

Would be a decent signing on loan.

So rereading that, do we want to loan him now and buy if it goes well in the summer?

Would be happy with this one. Maybe a try before attempting to bring on a permanent kinda thing.
Hopefully Lati out the door.

I just don't get it. A complete departure of what we're supposedly all about.

I don’t see the point in a loan for a player who would presumably take several weeks to get up to speed. Unless we’re signing him in the summer I guess.

I’m not opposed to spending a lot of money on someone who’s going to lead by example and let their experience rub off on our other defenders. I’m just not sure that someone who’s played 25 games in the last three seasons is that guy.

He’s fallen out with the palace manager …. They will be subsiding his salary where ever he goes.

I like this deal alot to be honest. While he hasn’t played much this year he’s kept his fitness up.

Good age and experience at the very highest level, would be a great start of building a spine for the squad. Would benefit all the CBs. Would like it to be a loan with a option to buy tho as opposed to just a loan

Buying young, undervalued talent.

Yes we should be supplementing that with experience but King didn't want to do that in the summer. Loaning a 29 year old that is training alone & barely kicked a ball in 2 years, on approx. £45k per week which they'd expect us to cover a significant portion of is a complete departure when there's nothing to play for this season.

I guess the loan is to find out. Might end up being just what we need. If so we try and convince him to stay, if not we go our separate ways.
Ultimately people like to talk about Fadz and losing experience. Guy is 29 and spent most his career at Arsenal, Fadz spent his best years at Burton. I'm prepared to give it a chance.

wasn't he sent to train with the u21s rather than alone?

he'd be a very good cb at this level

Don't know what nothing to play for means. The stronger we finish the season the better for everyone involved, including us fans.

Maybe King has woken up and realised his transfer strategy is not working and having a detrimental effect on the assets, just look at the figures being mentioned for MVE compared to the summer

Given the current mentality/attitude issues in the squad, a player that’s been frozen out of a premier league team for just that doesn’t sound appealing

You can’t just have a young team with no leaders in the dressing room.

This doesn’t mean the model of having a young squad is over but instead is building a spine which can help guide and mentor like Faz, Kelly and Godden.

I think we have to get the balance right. The main aim is to buy young and unknown, develop and sell but we need to have loans and old heads to balance things out.

Apart from trying to sign Browne?

I’d imagine we’re also looking at it with a view to signing him permanently in the summer.

I agree. Doesn't generate £££s for Doug though which is what I mean about it being a departure from his previous stance.

I agree. Just not sure a player on a huge salary who hasn't played a first team game for almost 2 years is the answer.

Not sure that someone who has barely played for years and has fallen out with his current manager is someone that we need tbh.

I’m not entirely convinced either, but if it starts as a loan and we’re not paying his full wage I guess we could do a lot worse.

Experience wise is what we need but surely he’ll be miles off match sharpness and the demands of this league in terms of fitness

On the face of it looks a decent signing but simply not played much football over several years

Longer term possibly. Certainly fits the bill for leadership & experience.

Huge salary for a short term loan on a player not played competitively in 2 years though. Especially as the season is over. Is he a realistic summer signing given he has another year on a £45k p/w contract? Is he prepared to rip that up for approx. 50% reduction here? Do we need to abandon a high line/pressing to accommodate his lack of pace?

Yep we've signed a few like that in the past and it takes 10-15 games for them to get anywhere near match fit and sharp, with only 21 games left of the season it seems pointless to me.
