it’s not tax fraud is it? I’d avoid paying any tax if I could if it’s legal

I don't agree with it. Loopholes should be closed.
At a time when public services are once more being savaged by cuts the government should be maximising tax revenue.

According to UK law, she does pay her fair share. The argument is that without non-dom status being an option, she’d find a way to pay nothing.

This is the problem with social media politics, a justifiable point and then unnecessary stuff gets thrown in the mix ie furlough, which dilutes what is the main, valid question. Plenty of usually profitable large companies used the scheme and it basically protected the economy and public from wide spread redundancies, so as shmmeee said, its fair, valid use of the scheme unless fraud was involved. Also if we’re talking about a company where she has a minority shareholding, that decision to use the scheme is probably nothing to do with her

For what it’s worth I think there is no way Sunak gets to PM with his wife using non dom status for tax purposes. It might be legal but morally it’s just wrong. The only excuse would be if she’s paying equal/more tax in say India (country of birth and majority of where income is derived I think) in which case, in my eyes at least, it’s not avoidance but helping her country of birth through paying her dues there. If she’s minimising her tax liabilities by using some tax haven it’s obviously a totally different matter. In all the uproar has anyone seen this info yet as I haven’t ?

Ive never really cared what people earn, that’s their business but if you’re that rich just pay your fair share

I Agree Steve, As long as she's paying the correct amount in whichever country the earnings are made then its not an issue at all. People can't be expected to pay tax in two countries at the same time on the same earnings.
I do suspect that there might be someone digging away as we speak to find a link to a bank account or company in the Bahamas.

Which is why I’m a bit confused about the Green Card situation - if he does still have one then he’s paying loads of tax to Uncle Sam for the privilege!

He doesn't still have one. I think the suggestion was that they were registered for income in one of the low (no?) tax states, although that has yet to be determined so may be proven to be untrue.

Get out of here, jealously my arse. What you're seeing is anger and disgust at the whole 'one rule for them and one rule for us' thing.

If you weren't so obsessed with apologising for people like the chancellor, you might actually realise that you're a bit closer to us than you are to them.

You're like an abused spouse mate, "He only hits me 'cos he loves me".

Don'tknow tbh, and don't know if that still makes the tax burden decidedly limited for them compared to here. I'll let it play out, I think! One thing that wouldn't make much sense though, is why you'd have a green card while professing that you intended to re-settle in India / stay settled in the UK. Talk about hedging your bets!

Agree with a lot of that, though I do care what people earn. If some people are mega, mega rich, while others are starving and in poverty, that just doesn't sit comfortably with me at all, so yes, I do care

I also am left wondering how on earth the likes of Rees Mogg can be a representative of the people, when they have no idea what it's like for the average person out there on the street.

Induction for new MP's should be 3-4 months in social housing with only basic UC to pay for their bills.

Equally could argue that someone who is worth hundreds of millions doesn't need to work, I wouldn't and doubt many would, but clearly someone who puts that shift in to want to do well and for the greater good. Whether he achieves that in everyone's eyes is probably a different discussion, but basically a decent bloke who the press have some agenda agsinst and are consistently trying to discredit him at the moment.

Also loving the criticism he gets above for raising taxes though by people who traditionally should applaud it but instead use it as a stick to beat him with.

Not for the greater good.

For his own benefit, his own ego, his own sense of self-importance and his own sense of superiority because of his wealth and upbringing.

Maybe in his own head he think that equates to the greater good because he's had that priviliged brainwashing course tht seems to be part of public school induction.

Never understood how people so rich become so greedy. A lot of people if they became a millionaire would be proud to pay tax and would love to help invest massively in good causes. How much more money does this family want/need?

Because you've got it the wrong way round.

They get so rich because they're so greedy to start with.

Inherited wealth, more just the fact they're brought up to believe they have to have it because the lower orders can't be trusted with money.

Abused spouse probably a bit strong. Domesticated house pet with unwavering loyalty to his cruel master might have been better.

I would say that under any over government Rishi's front bench political career would be over, but this is Boris Johnson's government where anything goes.

When you think of the politicians who would have had career ending incidents in any other generation of politics it’s basically the whole cabinet. Patels career would have ended when May sacked her and Boris wouldn’t have been let anywhere near the cabinet let alone to reside in number 10. We’re at an all time low for British politics.

Ah bless, you said something incredibly stupid, realised you couldn't defend it, so you're pretending it was a wind up and claiming victory.

Grendel's slightly dimmer apprentice basically.

Only the difference is all I said was a single throwaway line after others had already said it wasn't out of jealousy, you know as in a bit of fun that clearly as always passes over the miserable fekkers like yourself who look for darkness in everything. Nice try though I'll award you 6/10
