If I don't believe in God and think religion is man made bollocks, does this mean I will go to hell for eternity? Even though I do a hell of a lot more for the vulnerable within society than most people?

No religion speaks for anyone. People speak for their religious beliefs

And a bad priest goes to heaven because most of the time he does the work of the Lord?

Did you look at the link SB put on here?

It is the line of thought I have had for a bit of time now. Bit of a scary thought if you think about it too hard though.

I suppose I'd ask both of you why do you care what people say happens to you after you die. It appears you believe do unto others as they do to you and that's absolutely fine. Life is for living I think you'd be surprised if we discussed the christysn faith in a pub for a period of time

I'm not sure you and I decide who is welcome in gods kingdom. For me I'm more bothered about my responses to what life throws at me and how I respond than judging others

Why do you care? I think that god is bigger than all our petty squabbles and limited understanding but then I'm probably veering towards a Christian Universalism. Not to placate you guys but that seems to fit more with gods eternal character. Friends disagree and talk about his purity and holiness but that's something we won't know till we are under the ground. Well our bodies are at least

We won't know anything as our brain will have died, and along with it, the concept of the self and time.

Not me. I'm going to become ashes instead just on the off chance I got the god thing wrong and would have been heading towards hell

If there is a God then this has to mean that humans lived at the same time as dinosaurs?

Or he fancied a pet more than human company.....or he isn't human......

It must be hard to work out what you think is the truth from a book that contradicts itself.

Same question to you but why is it so hard to accept there is something more.

500 or so eye witnesses to Jesus coming back from the dead and 2000 years later still going strong

Why is it so hard to accept there isn't? Why is it so hard to accept that there is literally no point and purpose to life?

I'd rather listen to reason and science than whispers from a book written by men about someone 'coming back from the dead' 2000 years ago.

Do you believe that Darwin was wrong? Was he one of Satan's crew?

I don't see why? Could you explain ?? I think it's clear they were on earth hundreds of millions of years ago and human beings nowhere near that long. I'm not a creationist there are things I cannot explain and that's ok for me. Not to not seek answers but to seek them in a narrative where god is

But I thought that god is said to have created the world we live in.

Have you read SB's link yet? It will give you a good idea where a lot of non believers consider us to possibly have come from.

of course it is a whole load of contradictions how could it not be. You need to see the meta narrative of god and his interactions with his people. As I've said before there is poetry, history, stories, myths and much more. It's written about a time before us and people who aren't us. It doesn't mean there isn't great wisdom included in it.
How does one know the truth? Good question how do we know truth? Is there universal truth for all time and for all people?

Darwin was a clergyman I think he got some things spot on other things are a theory that is the best guess as science would say. I have no problem with the theory of natural selection but I'm not a biologist so I don't know the detail to have more than a man in the street discussion

Sorry could you say which post. The genesis narrative of cessation is written in mythical form it's a story with a truth to tell. He created it yes, how who knows

And this is my problem with the bible. I am supposed to take it as the truth and follow it. But how can you follow something that contradicts itself? And if they can get a book wrong how much can viewing something change over 2,000 years?

Actually the idea was only floated in about 70CE in the gospel of Mark and I think it is more likely the idea came about by literal interpretations of a metaphor.

Sorry I think that what was written in the gospels was a follow up to the word of mouth stories that was typically how history was told in that world. There is strong literary evidence for the information included in the gospels and acts of the apostles
