Easy task pick players who you consider to be the most reliable you've seen over the years and those who might have been decent but always had a massive mistake in them

Reliable
Borrows
Nilsson

Clanger
David Rennie
Stephen Pressley
Aaron Phillips

Reliable: Usual suspects, most of mine have been mentioned.

Unreliable: Julian Darby - seemed to have a decent eye of goal, and his build up play was good sometimes, but defensively...clang, clang, clang!

Gary McSheffrey - peaked early in his career, or he just couldn't be relied on generally, when he came back. Blew hot and cold like a mofo.

David Rennie - again, scored a couple of decent goals, had a good attacking range of passes, but defensively...sheer plop.

Controversial one - Noel Whelan: this boy had the talent, the skill, the instincts and the vision to be a regular for his country, at the highest level. Pissed it all up the wall though, and his fitness levels were as low as his motivation for 95% of his City career.

David Burrows - never liked him, personally. Looked confused and out of position constantly, passing was terrible, bottled crucial tackles. A very poor, overrated player.

Andy Webster was the most unreliable for me. Hated watching him. Roland Nilsson was pure class week in week out.

Am I wrong in thinking that it took Dion a couple of years to get going? And in that time he was not that reliable in front of goal - lacked confidence? Then scored that great goal at Tottenham to keep us in the premier, and went from strength to strength. Bellamy missed so many chances in the season he was here, but was just coming back from a serious injury when we signed him.

Reliable - for me Phil Babb, Dion Dublin, Marton Fulop, Keiren Westwood, Dennis Wise and I always quite liked Ady Williams too.

Unreliable - too many in recent times, however this is controversial but I always worried about Oggy, always thought he had a mistake in him, and couldn't kick.
Remember during what I consider our best season in my lifetime of the 7 straight wins, Moldovan scoring at villa park, beating Man U 3-2, etc the home FA Cup game against sheff Utd. Hedman was injured so oggy played. Oggy came out of his goal for a clearance late on and blasted it straight at their striker. Fair play he recovered and they didn't score (although we went out eventually anyway) but that moment sealed it for me. I know he retired soon after but he went on too long for me.

If (and I think it is) the game I'm thinking of he did score, was the 1/4 final and Dublin put
Us 1-0 up from the spot in the 1st half, Oggy mistake was last minute.
Replay at Brammel lane, Telfer put us 1-0 up 1st half only to concede late on again, then
Got thrashed on pens, was absolutely devastated the semi was af Old Trafford against a
Very beatable Newcastle side. Gutted :emoji_cry:

Oh! And David Speedy the rest have been mentioned.
As for unreliable, as others have said there are literally 100s.

Am I the only one who took the op to mean decent but the odd mistake for category 2? Seems most have listed generally unreliable players.

For the category as I interpreted it, I'd say Elliot Ward. Fabulous player for 89 minutes but a mistake every game.

Half correct - the oggy mistake It was last minute in front of the east stand. They had already equalised in the first half and the scorer was wearing two shirts and took one off and threw it into their fans.

Sorry mate but I was sat in the east stand.
And I just checked, my head is obviously more puddled than I thought,

Sincere apologies AJB1983, worrying thing is I really thought Oggy mistake
Led to the equaliser, would have put my house on it :emoji_flushed:and I was there.

Most reliable would be the whole team back in the 60's wheen Hunt, Machin, Curtis, Glazier, Carr et all turned out every week for the shirt.
Unreliable are all too obvious down the years!

Scored one of the great own goals at QPR, miskick and the ball spun 180 degrees into the net.

How could reda be classed as reliable when he never played? By conduct that's unreliable!
