Since lampard arrived it's arguable only rudoni has out performed him.

Disagree.

Thomas would be a better fit.

Make the dream happen.

Bobby - Charlton.

No he's a high energy ball winning defensive midfielder.

He’s played more than Sheaf, Eccles, Allen and has much better goal contributions than all 3. Considering we would get more money for Sheaf and Eccles all 3 of those I’d earmark to leave before Torp

Goal contributions - fine. You’ll never see him “in” games as much as the other three. He’s not mobile enough to cover Rudoni. So he falls between stools for me. Nice player who has ability but not quite what you want in the engine room of the team.

Retained list is usually 7 days after the season finishes so imagine next week. Will only be out of contract players named anyway

Splitting hairs here. How does that differ from a box-to-box midfielder?

It arguably downplays just how effective Kante was in attacking transitions too.

For me a box to box midfielder is some one who also well as being defensive minded, also gets themselves into the goalscoring positions in the opposition box, like a Bryan Robson, Gerrard, Platt, Ballack, etc.

You’ve chosen more offensively minded midfielders there box-to-box midfielders are by nature, balanced. It’s a shoehorned definition imo.

At his best, Kante was getting decent amount of assists and given the systems he played in (4-4-2 and 3-4-3 in the Prem) frankly needed to have a presence in going forward.

‘Box to box’ is such a broad term, you could apply the term to Bellingham and Rice equally. Yet the two players play v differently.

Anyway, to move on from getting bogged down on this any further… what did you have in mind when you said we needed a BBM?

Deadline from who out of interest?

I didnt expect it to be a rule anywhere, just a courtesy by the clubs announcing who their out of contract players are!

you are not wrong - play off clubs get an extension to "4 days after their final play off game" - so that still makes it today!

Yeah, doesn't have to be made public by that date necessarily, but the players have to be informed by the deadline.

A version of Hamer 2022/23 would be amazing in our system.

Well, as others have alluded, I think that was based on his performance against Middlesbrough, when he suddenly seemed to look a very decent player.

But he then returned to his old self in that Sunderland first leg.

I really want to like BTA, but it seems to me that his approach to getting past an opponent is to either beat them for pace. Or to just try and batter his way through them.
Against Boro he played as a 1 against 1 striker which is BTA's strong asset.
Against Sunderland two blocks of four where his pace is negated.
Lampard needs to decide how we play. We have two good wingers and strikers who are better running onto the ball or playing counter attacking football.

my opinion of sheaf has changed massively in the last few weeks. i think he showed real heart, maybe having quality alongside him in the shape of grimes has reset his thoughts about his chances of making a difference in the side.
if he can stay injury free him and grimes is a great looking midfield base.

Don't think Sheaf has been 100% due to injuries.
If he can perform how he did in the previous two seasons, he would be a rel asset.

I'm going to say it and have already prepared myself for the flak that I'm bound to receive but a one year contract for Liam Walsh wouldn't be the worst idea ever in the history of bad ideas. He orchestrated everything when we played Luton recently.
Apparently he had a really positive influence in the dressing room as well during his loan spell with us.
It's only my opinion but I really think that he could do a job for us, and no, I'm not his brother, wife or mother.

Didn’t he spend most of his time banned or injured?

If he’s like he was he’s the right profile but the wrong person for me. Never go back. Unless it’s Vik or Hamer.

He's a decent player at this level, but he was outstanding when we went down to 10 men, I doubt he'd of Been so influential if we'd of kept 11 players on the pitch.

Let's not forget he's now been relegated, so clearly he wasn't that good.

I remember him being massively influential during his time with us despite a few injuries, but he seems to have proved over the last season that his hitherto injury record has been laid to rest but maybe not so much his disciplinary record.
I'd definitely take a punt on him Shmmmee

I don't think that he was entirely culpable for their relegation fatso but I get what you're saying.
I just think that with Lampard at the helm and how much he's progressed our midfielders, Liam Walsh could do a job for us next year.

We need to move on from Walsh. We should be looking at players with better value and who will play more minutes

As I said he's not a bad player, but who would he replace? He's no Rudoni or Grimes, so that leaves Sheaf and he's no defensive midfielder.
TBF he could add to our squad if we offload Allen or Eccles, but would we pay good money for a player who's no better than Torp?

He played the Hamer pivot role originally. I’d like to see us get a similar type who can put a foot in, dribble through the middle, ping a pass and take a shot from range. Maybe someone a bit more physical than Walsh as well as younger and less injury prone.

Eh, I wouldn't want Liam Walsh personally. I think we could get someone better who's also younger. Not to mention the fact he's made out of pringles and struggles to see out a season.

I think that he's a totally different player to Grimes or Rudoni. He's great at moving into that pocket of space that few players can see. I'm not suggesting he replaces anyone but if we needed to change the game he'd be ideal.

Every signing we make this summer has to bridge the gap to the top 3.

Since Lampard took over, we’ve been the 4th best team in the division and it’s fair to say we’re quite a distance from Burnley, Leeds and Sheff U. If Sunderland win in the playoffs, we have to contend with Sheff U as well as the 3 relegated teams.

As much attention as the strikers have got of late, in a formation where we play 1 striker, there needs to be 2-3 more goal scorers. Outside of Wright, Rudoni and EMC… there’s not many goals in the team.

Put in perspective, centre back Bobby Thomas was our 6th top goal scorer. Scored more than Sakamoto, Sheaf, Eccles, Grimes and MVE (and so on). That’s not sustainable and you can’t bank on a CB getting 5 goals a season.

We need more quality across the team to bridge the gap to really compete close to the top 3.
