The right-wing press group refuges and illegal immigrants into the same group. They then take it even further to dehumanise them by describing them as arriving in swarms and invaders.

The depressing thing is that people fall for it and they turn even more insular. Most of these people have never interacted with another culture. If I had it my way all school children would take part in a cultural exchange where they spend several months in another country mixing with other nationalities.

I find it refreshing when my daughter mixed with different races and people from different backgrounds. Recently we went away and she was talking to little girls of different races and of course kids will always ask questions as I doubt the little muslim girl had ever interacted much with girls like my daughter but they were on a roller coaster and were having fun!

However, my polish neighbors have a kid who is about 5 who only ever interacts with polish people and can't speak a word of English.

I disagree with things being limited to races or nationalities. Why does there need to be societies and clubs based on race or colour?

I have no issue with the kids in her class being different colors, races and religion as long as it doesn't harm her education like it does when you have kids in there who can't speak English, which is the fault of their parents. She made friends with a couple of polish girls in school who spoke perfect.English which I found amazing, there were others who had no clue.

Murdoch would have you believe that this is an issue about immigration. This is a humanitarian crisis on a parallel with famine or other type of natural disaster.

What is so wrong with the idea of some of it at least?

We should encourage interaction between different cultures and societies at an early age. That way tolerance and acceptance prevails over fear and ignorance.

Have to agree 100% with this.

There's a Polish guy who's just started at my work, and he said when he came here, he couldn't speak English. And he said it was actually very scary unable to communicate, and embarrassing.

He then took a business degree in English at college or Uni (can't remember which). This is what I admire.

If I moved to France, Spain etc, I would take extra effort to learn the native language, not just get by with the odd phrase.

In answer to the thread, I honestly don't know.

I don't believe the solution is move Syrian citizens out of Syria to other countries. Where would this leave Syria? Could it become IS controlled, and the first IS country? On this, I have to agree with Cameron, in that to find a solution to the root of the problem, and help rebuild the country.

However, you see the thousands of desperate people risking their lives to get away from Syria, and obviously we as human beings should help.

I just simply don't know. And I don't believe anyone else does to be honest.

They aren't rhetorical are they? It's asking what action to take?

I do my bit for charity as does my wife, I've also worked at a charity so I may not be the most trusting of all of them.

Giving money, goods or food to poor people never helped anyone in the long run. They need to be taught how to earn their own money and grow their own food. Instead they are busy blowing up the ancient temples and destroying the tourism industry, one of their few sources of income. The result of what is happening now will be the destabilization of Europe, it has already started happening.

Pretty soon there will be no need for that. There wont be any schools in the UK that don't have a mix of nationalities and cultures.

Why are they at Calais then? If they were just wanting to flee for their lives why go so far? That's what I don't understand.

note that is applications, we have one of the highest rejection rates in Europe so you have to factor that in as well.

You could argue that the refugees should be allocated to the countries with most room i.e the lowest density of population.
On that basis, Russia should be the prime candidate with a population density of 8 people per square kilometre and having over 17 million square kilkometres, easily the largest in Europe and 70 times bigger than the UK. The UK and Germany having two of the highest densities in Europe should be among the last countries to be considered.

In Germany the Most anti Immigrant places are the ones with the least immigrants. As you say they have never interacted with another culture and have a fear of foreigners. I, like you, am an EU Migrant - we're ok though because we're British ( sarcasm ).

No, not if you are a foreign refugee. Maybe not life threatening, but you will be treated badly. Germany is better and that is why they are coming to Germany. Our local paper ( Kieler Nachrichten ) has distributed a "Refugees welcome" poster with every copy. I won't be putting it in the window though - I have a pub and not all my guests are so welcoming. That ( poster distribution ) wouldn't happen in Hungary ( hope you can correct me ).

Anybody else surprised to see the amount of fit and healthy young men that should be back home fighting.

Personally, I don't think European countries should be taking in these people, set up refugee camps in neighbouring countries, protected/funded by the west.

I believe that video is showing people refusing food and water after the train for which they'd bought tickets for had been prevented from leaving the station multiple times. They were unhappy that they'd been allowed to spend money on tickets that the Hungarian government had no intention of letting them use. So rejecting the aid from the same people was a matter of principle, rather than arrogance.

That said, I'm sure not everyone on the train agreed with taking that symbolic stance - as you can see from the little girl who does take some food.

They are rhetorical really - you're not genuinely looking for answers, you're looking for excuses not to contribute. No matter how many of your questions get answered, you can always move the goalposts and point to another unknown factor that can justify your inaction. Why pretend that you'd run to the rescue if only you had more clarity? Why not just admit that you'd rather not help?

Hungary don't want them.

The majority of the Syrians were happy to seek refuge and settle in Turkey until Merkel announced that Germany would give them refuge, causing the stampede that's now taking place.

The Hungarian PM was correct, Germany has a lot to answer for.

Good grasp of history there Grendel.

Hungary suffered terribly under the Ottoman Empire- as did Bulgaria and Greece- this may go some way to explaining their reluctance to accept a horde of Muslim immigrants.
