I wasn’t convinced by either pen shout in real time. The first one on Wright is really tricky to call. You can see the intent on the second one. You can see the moment where he’s falling and just deliberately surges that extra bit to bring EMC down. It’s a pen for me.

The tactic for defenders when beaten now & the wrong side, just fall into the attackers legs. As they've not used their feet to trip them, the Refs buy it as just a clumsy & off balance coming together but in reality, it's a penalty.

Exactly.

Okoli makes sure he hits EMC with his shoulder on his way down and Wright has the defender fall into and on top of his leg.

And the bear hug Simms early in the game. He rolled the defender to chase a through ball and the defender just wrapped both arms around Simms chest and dragged him backwards no attempt to play the ball.
Ref had a good view of that as well

The first penalty claim was valid. The player basically reached out to grab Wright’s leg to stop him shooting. However, by then Wright had already decided to fall down and I suspect the ref had already decided it wasn’t a penalty.

The second one on EMC was similar. I wasn’t suprised that neither was given but looking back it’s bizarre we’ve only had two penalties this season (away to Derby and Millwall in the league cup).

And the DaSilva tackle wasn’t a red, but it was extremely foolhardy from someone just coming back from a three match suspension for an almost identical misjudgment.

I actually really liked the ref yesterday
He allowed physicality and it worked to make the game a spectacle
He missed multiple foul throws by their left back but oh well and he also in my opinion should have given a penalty for the emc challenge

Two things I really noticed

the foul on Lati starting the second half was a caution and allowing it could have meant the whole game exploded

The other was the use of the captain only signal. Our players immediately backed off and let grimes talk their players didn’t give a shit and although the lad at the back was cautioned all of those not moving away should have been

we won’t get credit for it but we bloody should

Forgot about that. He was right next to that incident and if he hasn’t seen it, he’s incompetent

We are not getting penalties but we did get a couple of big decisions yesterday. Kitchin’s elbow on their striker what had come on in the first round of subs could easily have been given as a red card.
And the late run by Leicester which was pulled back for offside looked very very much on when you consider the position DaSilva was in as the ball was played through.

The first penalty would have been a red card

We cannot expect officials to see this sort on thing when in a couple of their throwins yesterday the player had his foot well on the playing area and was not spotted.

Isn't that the linos job? Although recently they completely miss the ball going out of play

It is but his foot was so far on for one that i think even the directors box should have seen it and they are on the opposite side of the pitch.

Also on at least one occasion second half the right back had one foot off the ground when taking a throw as well as numerous times having one foot over the line.

Shows why the target man has been killed off. If defenders can legally do that, it’s not a fair competition for the ball.

We see it week in, week out.

Both were pens. I honestly can’t even see the debate. Clumsy, contact, nothing on the ball. And when I see ones like Liverpool were given yesterday, it’s even more baffling how we haven’t been given at least one since Derby.

Frank need to keep calling them out, even if it means a fine. The ref's should face criticism if their performance is below the 'standard' whatever that is!

Both were pens and they should have had 2 red cards. Some of the takes on here are ridiculous.

Thought the first pen appeal would have been harsh but would love to see a replay. The second one on EMC seemed nailed on - even more bizarre is watching the replay and the commentator seems to still think it’s not a penalty I guess it’s a game of opinions…

Think Lampard has been more vocal about referees’ performances than most of our previous managers, and if it’s a deliberate strategy then it’s hard to say it’s working

I wonder if we’ve got a reputation for going down easily amongst refs. A lot of these shouts have been bodily contact rather than kicks or trips.

Have the rules changed where it's ok if it's not a kick or trip?

Not seen that either, but a red when Haji is last man and one for trying to hit Kitching. Not sure he connected but no different to what Thomas did at Blues.

The commentator was of the opinion he didn't trip EMC but the defender clearly moved his body into Ephron's stride ensuring he would fall that's a penalty as far as I'm concerned.

It seems that if you trip someone up with your head then it’s okay. If the Leicester guy had tackled EMC with his feet instead of his head, would it have been given? In reality, if you bring a player down and get no where near playing the ball it doesn’t matter which part of your body you use, it’s a penalty. I haven’t seen the one on Wright replayed but in real time that looked exactly the same as the ‘tackle’on EMC. Similar circumstances as the one at Southampton too.

In what world isn't that a pen? Have the rules changed?

In which case. Rushworth should just go running out and wipe strikers out with his body as it's not a pen.

Something that the ref and linos missed today were the constant foul throws from their left back, Thomas. His foot was over the line every time he took a long throw.

Compared to missed penalties it's nothing, but it helps set the tone for poor officiating.

I said that too his foot/feet were over the line but the referees snitch didn't see it!

Still don't see in what world that isn't a penalty. No intention to go for the ball so probably a red card.
