it’s bad when there is no choice about when you leave work. I only benefitted once when I was under 30 and wanted to go anyway.

I've been made redundant 3 times i think, my industry is highly unstable. I was in fact in danger in my current role too but have taken a position in another department starting in Jan. First time it was very upsetting but water off a ducks back now, even though i would absolutely hate to be job hunting again in the current market. Just get yourself on LinkedIn and don't sulk, applying for jobs is depressing as fuck and you will get knocked back but remember your worth and stay positive. I don't know if you've made many contacts over the years but i've always found the best way to get new employment is having an 'in' who can at least get you to the interview stage.
On the plus side if you have any shows to catch up on or some games you wanted to play, now is the time!

I work as a Client Relationship manager for a cyber security company

Final consultation is 8th Jan, 30 days from today. Plus point is, I get 3 months notice as part of my contract so that is apparently gardening leave. Negative, only statutory redundancy and outstanding holiday pay so around 2.5k as a redundancy payment


Im alright until April with the notice pay etc its just the time of year ffs. Surely even big companies should think 'yea we will leave anything like this until Jan'

Tbf 2.5k plus 3 months basically being paid to do nothing is more than i've ever got. Try and enjoy those 3 months if you can, you may never be that free again until you are at an age where you struggle to coax out an erection or a 'fall' could be a one way ticket to RIP.

Happened to me in November 2 years ago, (except it was just a meeting with about 50 of us to say dont turn up tomorrow) sucks but New year can be a good time to find a new job

Happened to me, it's awful.

Was a week's consultancy and then my 4 weeks pay. Thankfully found a better job from it and it gave me a bit of a kick up the arse.

Hopefully you have the 3 months to get something lined up rather than it having to be tomorrow!

Yeah, it does suck. I worked for an American company in the late 80’s and they decided to let 200 of us go in the uk. (2 companies merged, and so there was too many peeps). Finished 31st Dec. Being on the market with about 30 people from similar roles wasnt fun. Took me 8 weeks to get hired again, and like you I had 3 months severance, so got sorted with time to spare.

it was good and bad.
Bad when they announced it just before December, making Xmas stressful, stress looking for another job, bad when I only got paid 4 yrs of my 5 year redundancy ! Bad when they re-hired a guy who’d left a year before to go to South Africa, and came back during Xmas….

Good because I needed a change anyway, and it didn’t actually take that long to get a new job, good meeting new people and developing lasting friendships with them, good because the new people introduced me to ski-ing, and Lots of trips to USA which I enjoyed.

it seems awful at the time, but look forward positively and things should turn around for you, and it may be a better end result.

Not been through it and sorry to read that you are, but I actually think they've done you a favour letting you know now. I know it feels shitty and a dampener on Christmas, but would be way worse and irresponsible to let people overspend and then get rid.

Unfortunately ive been through the process a number of times (with the same company) so far ive always dodged the bullet, (more by luck than judgment) the first time it happened was just after my daughter was born, and my wife has just been diagnosed with cancer!
The second and third times were just after I'd moved house and taken on bigger mortgages !!!

its a shit process, and its come at the worst time of year, so I feel for you mate.

If its any consolation, all the people that were made redundant soon found work, and most have improved their financial position, none of them regret leaving. And none of them struggled, although it sometimes takes a little time.

Also remember you are in a growing market, cyber security is big business, so put yourself out there. Look at it as an opportunity.

Get your name out there with agencies and recruiters, they will have their contacts and will be aware of opportunities that won't be advertised publicly.

Not had direct experience of redundancy but at my last employer I was on a secondment at the next grade up when redundancies were announced. My secondment was unwound and salary dropped by just over £20k. Found out about it on the first day of my other half’s maternity leave.

The company I work for keeps trimming the workforce, lady I sit next to has her last day next week. Hard to feel relaxed and motivated to be honest. Best of luck in your search, hopefully you'll bag something better.

Been through 3 restructures at my place, and it's never great, and the three month gardening leave will hopefully give you a decent period to get something lined up

Hope you get sorted soon and can put the uncertainty behind you, following a buy out this year my company have made three lots of redundancies, mostly voluntary, I decided to take it on the second occasion after regretting not going in the first lot. I was hoping to get another 3 or 4 years there before retirement but took the payout and paid the mortgage off, I am combining pensions so i can eek things out. It's worked out ok for me but I've been in the position 4 times over the years and it's worrying when you have bills to pay, onwards and upwards Saddle

Sorry to hear that, wont help but I suspect if it is their year end at December then they can put all the costs into the accounting year now by starting the process and then have a clear slate next year even if they are paying you then.

I was made redundant from Rolls Royce Ansty in 2010. I was 59 at the time. Tried looking for work, but at my age at the time, was against me. So I thought, sod it, I took early retirement along with my missus, sold the house, paid off a few bills and moved to the Isle of Wight where we both had a great 8 years. Best thing that ever happened to me! Now back in the Midlands where we moved in 2018.
