I like him but can't afford part timers I'm afraid

I can't believe he's not passed 30 yet!

If we don't re-sign him someone else will, but with his record of Injurys, I'd rather he be on someone else's pay roll.

All you lot talking about getting rid are talking shite, replacing him like for like would cost decent money which what little TM will get could be used elsewhere, so what he got injured that happens and lets not forget the Pressley factor. He is exactly the type of player to lead a promotion push hopefully we stay up keep Mowbray at the helm and I believe TM will get a lot more out of all the players including Johnson..

Looks like TM wants to keep the big fella.....

Tony Mowbray wants to build a team around Reda Johnson subject to the manager and influential player staying at Coventry City beyond the end of the season.

Although the Sky Blues boss’s future is still to be decided, the 51-year-old is already making plans for next term and they include getting the strapping defender to sign a new contract.

There are major concerns about his appearance record but Mowbray believes he could be the manager to get 40-odd games a season out of the 27-year-old if he can convince him to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

“Unfortunately it’s out of our hands,” said the City boss; “it’s going to be Reda’s decision rather than my decision, which is a bit frustrating and yet that’s the reality of it.

“In this league more than a lot of leagues this team needs a dominant, powerful centre-half and he fits the bill. And yet, of course, you would expect and want him to play 40-odd games a season not 20-odd. Hopefully something can get sorted out.


“Let’s wait and see if he shows his fitness but the potential is that Championship clubs will be knocking on his agent’s door and asking the questions – if that’s the case it’s out of our hands and we can’t do anything about it.

"The boy has to earn a living and if he chooses to do that somewhere else we have to take that on the chin.

“But is he a player we’d like to try to progress and build a club with? I think he’s the type of player we would like to do that with.

“I like to think my relationship with him over the weeks I’ve been here is strong and there’s mutual respect.

"I appreciate his talents as a footballer and he sees that I treat footballers like men. And I like to think that he feels that if he took his chance to stay at Coventry that he’d enjoy his time here and be respected, and hopefully we can benefit each other.

“But let’s see what happens. It’s in his hands and a decision will be known when the season finishes.”

Asked is he’s confident that given the right training and fitness programme Johnson can play more than 20 games a season, Mowbray said: “Of course. A leopard generally doesn’t change his spots and if you look back he’s only played 20-odd games a season over the last five or six years, so why is it going to change?

“Well, hopefully it’s going to change and I’d be that manager that sits here and says we can get that to change because we’d closely monitor what he does in training every day.

“It’s something that he’s got to look at and we’ve have to look at because he’s one of those players who trains to a maximum every day, every tackle in a five-a-side or small sided game or a bit of shape we’re doing is like a prisoner to him.

"And sometimes you have to take the intensity out of training for people like that because that’s the only way they know; to train like they play, which is why you pick up injuries, knocks and strains.

“Sometimes you don’t put them into the situations and they might not like it if they are told they have to jog around the pitch today rather than join in a small-sided game but, ultimately, for people like that it’s about Saturday afternoon and Tuesday nights, and they have to have their boots on, their name on their back and be ready to play for the badge on the front.

“That’s where we have to go with a player like Reda because I have to say with someone of his power, stature and quality it would be a huge aid for this football team if we were at the other end of the table if he played every game.”

I presume that option was to be triggered by making a number of appearances (like Clive Platts a couple of years a go), and he hasn't (and can't) made enough appearances to trigger the extension .

It wasn't the option of another year.

it was weirdly worded like 'option to discuss another year' so it is most likely An option in his favour whether to sign or not.

I think we need to look at how we manage him. He's obviously a good playter (we all know that), we just need to get him (mentally and physically) right

lol me and tony know so much more about footy than you guys.

If he's here next year we should do a Ledley King job on him, just wrap him in cotton wool all week with minimal training and getting him prepared for the weekend.

Remember when he signed there was some ridiculous wording like a one year deal with a negotiation clause. A Championship club will take a chance on him.

Interesting take by TM about taking care of Reda by keeping him out of too many practise games, where he might get injured. Which just goes to show how the experience and knowledge of a good manager can help.

Well, I was saying Reda was too much of a liability, but if TM can improve the number of games he appears in, from 16 or so to 30 plus then he is worth another year, especially if his presence is positive for morale around the place.

We would have been relegated if we didn't have him this year...FACT. So get him for next year by all means possible, or someone else will

Get rid of him, he is a liability. Find a similar player who is injury-free. Surely they must exist. That is if we want success. If we are content with another relegation struggle or mid-table finish, keep him.

You cannot build a house on a foundation that is suspect. Otherwise the walls might crack or the house fall down.

Same here.

He seems to be made of glass, but the record of the team when he is in the side is just outstanding. I think now that has to be worth another year and hopefully TM's plan of him taking it a bit easier in training will pay off.

We'll be lucky to keep him. He's an absolute beast at this level.

Pressure really is on SISU this summer. I hope Mowbray keeps banging on about investment.

One year contract extension at absolute best on same terms or pay as you play deal. If he asks for more let him go we will get someone
just as good and more reliable for the wages if TM is at the helm. TM likes him so hopefully that helps persuade all parties to move towards a fair
deal for all parties.

Depends on who else wants him but if we can get him on a low basic salary, with big appearance bonuses, then it might be worth it. Wonder if the change of manager and the way he has handled has any impact on the fact he's back in the team and has played 3 games in a row with no issues.

Yes the new manager seems to know how to look after him and keep him on the pitch, without wishing to be cynical but we have had players who are injured a lot and then seem to get fit around contract renewal and then sign and get injured again.

Says a lot about his form, he has made the football league paper team of the week for the 2nd straight week. Sounds like he played a blinder yesterday

He was awesome Kirky

He makes a difference. He is clearly better than everyone else in the team - a championship player in fact BUT if we can only get 5/6 games out of him a season of rather let him go.

he played 22 this season.

I reckon if Mogga stays signing Reda up will be one of the first things he does.

I think Reda Johnson will definately be asked to stay here, okay he got injured coincidently after the Worcester debacle at first. He is the ideal bloke to build a mean defence around and scores too. He is here, let him go and it will cost money to replace him, either a transfer fee, wages or both. He is also ideal to bring young Willis on too as a centre back, his proper position imo.

Pay a basic wage with a bonus in it if he plays over say 30 games or so, he may go for this.
