Baka is obviously not a new signing but it says something about our personnel department when they've looked at him play like shit for 2 years in L1 and decided that he would be a good use of our budget in the Championship. Biamou we hold less blame for as it was reported he was told he could leave but wanted to stay and fight for a place so in which case there's nothing we could do. We actively made the decision to keep Baka around at a cost to the club and not give him any game time, even when we were down to the bare bones.

Baka was clearly kept on as very cheap backup to the backup. I don't really have a problem with that, because the alternative would be to either sign a first choice striker (too expensive + just bought Walker), or to sign a replacement 4th choice striker which doesn't make sense to spend more money on a slightly better 4th choice

What on earth are you on about? Most people have said between average and poor.

What?

The majority have said average.

Your opinion has 30 odd percent. That is not the majority.

You are either too stupid to see facts, or you are so insecure that you choose not to.

67 votes: 32 for average, 22 for poor, 2 for very poor.

56 out of 67 votes have our recruitment down as average at best. How can you still state that you think your viewpoint is correct whilst trying to humiliate others? Our league position says we are shit, the poll of supports says they think it is a bit shit, but PVA lives on the moon with a bucket of magic mushrooms.

You can't just lump the average votes in with the poor votes.

That's not how polls work.

The majority have voted average. This is a fact.

Oh and our league position shows us almost exactly where I expected us to be.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to achieve by lumping in the average votes with the poor votes.

You realise I can do the same to you right?

65% of people think its been good or average, so now you're in the minority.

See?

Amongst a hive of villainy and stupid opinions, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone on here suggest you have to support England? But with the same token, if supporting England is so boring and detestable to you, why keep bringing it up or instigating club vs country? Brace yourself for this but 99.9% of England members will also support a club team.

There’s lots of City fans that follow England too and have a great time doing so.

But it's the number of players that are just in as backups that's the problem.

Just Baka, fine. Baka and Biamou, bit of a waste. Baka, Biamou and Gyokeres. Fucking chucking money away. Then when Godden and Walker are out 2 of them don't see the pitch anyway. It all adds up. If you're going to do that you may as well see if Bapaga has it in him.

Same with having 3 wingers in Jobello, Kastaneer and Hilssner sitting pretty on three year deals without getting close to the team, we don't even play with wingers FFS. It's less looking like a low risk high rewards strategy and looking like we're accumulating a huge squad of outcasts that have the potential to turn the dressing room sour.

Add in DaCosta, Giles, Camp and that we're still forking out for prospects form Scotland and Ireland that won't play a single minute and it looks like we're just chucking cash away when even 1 good quality championship player could make the difference between us staying up and going down.

Without turning this into yet another Sheaf debate. At the start of the season we were playing him and were doing reasonably well bit undoing ourselves with individual errors. At least we were developing someone slated to be our own player and we’re involved in games.

Since James has come in and taken that spot we’ve often looked extremely poor and taken a few absolute tonkings. He’s supposed to be an experienced head but we’ve so often looked wafer thin with him in the middle.

It looks like another case of players being judged before they kick a ball, Sheaf slated because a couple of Donny fans say he’s lazy but because Barnsley said James is incredible he can do no wrong.

If it wasn’t for injuries then I think we’d have been better off with Sheaf, Hamer and Kelly as a three and spending our January bringing in a striker that could play instead of Biamou in January.

Summer window OK. January window terrible.
Not going to disagree. I rated him a 5/10 more for his impact than overall potential. Relegate and he would be one of the first names on the team sheet next season. Stay up and hehas a battle to prove he should be in the team. Wenger was a decent judge of a player and had high hopes for him. Too young to write off as a dud, yet.

Good post. We seemed to have spend most of our budget on bolstering the squad, rather than improving the first 11.

Next season, given the return to a ‘normal’ schedule, I really want us to trim the squad and focus on quality over quantity. Who knows, maybe that’s the alternative motive behind signings for the u23s like Tavares. Waste of time having 5 first team strikers.

Convinced that if we cut numbers but increased our overall wage budget by 15-20% we could make a real decent fist of it.

Edit: and given the return of fans, I don’t think that’s overly unreasonable.

55/74 have it down as average at worst. That’s what happens when you try and claim other answers as yours.

Im not sure. The jump from a Baka to a Walker is likely 4/5x jump in wages. So you’d need to cut 3/4 players for every “quality” player you buy.

I think we need more like a 50% bump in wage bill.

That won’t happen though. Certainly not until we’ve fully established ourself in the division. For reference, I would also be looking to release McFadzean and probably Kelly to make it happen, so it won’t be just the lowest earners.

I doubt either of those are on much more than £2k/wk

This is why I’m not overly harsh on the recruitment, we simply don’t have the budget to compete at this level.

Why? Average top salary at L1 clubs is just under £5k/week. Kelly was signed first in L2 then got a new deal after promotion but is unlikely to be one of the top earners in the division. McFadzean maybe, but at his age I’d expect his earning power to decrease.

Our current top wage is rumoured to be around £10k, compared to an average for the division of £30k for the top earner.

We are miles off financially.

I voted ‘average’ as we’ve had some duds, some successes and some jury outs this season. The biggest mistake will turn out to be James, signed in the one position we’re OK in for depth.

Agreed, James is far too similar in position and ability to Kelly and left us trying to accommodate him. We’re far too narrow

Recruitment has been average. What we need is a bit of perspective.

Last season promoted sides

Wycombe - bottom
Rotherham - third bottom
Coventry - 4th bottom

2018-19 promoted sides

Charlton - relegated
Luton - looked dead and buried until last third of the season. Survived a few points clear of the drop.
Barnsley - survived last day of the season and helped by Wigan point deduction.

Yes, this relegation battle is horrible but we are doing about as well as we can expect as a newly promoted side with minimal resources.

I’d have them both at around £5-6k per week. I think we’re talking different stratospheres when I say you’re low-balling by quite a distance! Didn’t realise it may be interpreted that I thought they were among the top earners in the division. McFadzean’s earning power may decrease at this renewal, yes, but given we took him from a L1 rival (and one that had been in the Championship fairly recently) I’d wager he was one of our highest earners last season.

All I’m saying is I’d cut the squad size by 5 and look at moving on some of the larger wages that we need to upgrade (Marosi, McFadzean, Kelly among others) and hope that frees up space on the wage bill for 3-4 more coming in at £10k per week or thereabouts. Don’t get me wrong, I know that wage is still low for the league but I think it’d be sufficient to get some reasonable players in to be looking at a low-mid table finish. Evolution will take time.

If you want to free up the wage bill for £30k-40k p/w you'll be releasing more like 10+ players not 5.

Mcfazdean I’m sure was offered another contract by burton and they said they couldn’t compete with our wages and we took Allen as well

Wages when we were promoted from L2 rose by around 30% and the majority of that was cited as contractual promotion clauses so that will have automatically happened.

We’ve extended contracts on top of that Mason, Dabo etc and that’s going to include wage rises.

No one really knows what the overseas players cost - we were in league 1 one of the highest in terms of agent payments and a fair few clubs are below us in the championship on this - I suspect that’s almost a hidden cost in signing these sort of players
