I would say just above average, lack of pace an issue not addressed and the lack of bringing in a striker in January could cost us, Gyokeres what was the point ? we needed goals, also criticise the loaning in of two young left back/ wing backs which blocked a loan space. Osti, James, Hamer good, Sheaf average to good. No comment on DaCosta or Hilsner

Sounds right. We needed strengthening at centre back and up front the most, central midfield's the one place we have (relative) depth.

I suspect James was a mix of someone coming up and us wanting a bit of experience in with Kelly out. Him and McCallum are the only real strange signings, and both seemed to be because they came up rather than because we scouted them.

McCallum at least was a familiar face and meant Norwich were basically paying us to have him for 18 months. I appreciate Kelly was out but we also had even fewer options up front. I'd sooner we have aggressively pursued quality up front or at CB, even in attacking midfield.

Our loan signings have been largely disjointed and its been a case of sign players with no plan and make them fit the plan

Bakayoko was also a signing in the summer and needs to be factored into the ratings

Been average the likes of astigard hamer, walker,James, overall good signings.mccallum,Victor been okohare has been the most consistent and the best signing.
Where it's gone wrong is most of the overseas players seem to be getting worse in quality, fitness and seem like they were picked by video selection.
Sheaf, well I don't know wether he can step up ,he's young enough but is he good enough as if we're committed to signing him I hope he can wise up as his concentration on the pitch is poor and he needs more awareness of who's around him.
For me the budget could have been better spent, despite still being an average window in a poor season with a few real highlights.robins and the rest of staff in the recruitment department can learn a lot from it.

What are we comparing our transfers too? What’s the datum point? What’s the yard stick? There’s clubs in the championship who have been spending tens of millions over not many seasons building a team to compete in the championship. We’ve come and are still fielding players we brought in leagues 2 and 1 with a budget reported to be the second lowest in the league. On that basis I’d say we’ve done well. If we do go down we’ll have a better and more experienced team than the one that took us up so we’ve kicked on. If the yard stick is have we kicked on as a team then the only answer can be pretty good. If we stay up it’s excellent. If we go down, look a million dollars in league 1 and get promoted back to the championship at first try its excellent.

This is just absolute waffle.

The question is how good are our transfers this season. Not how do they compare to other transfers in the division, absolutely nothing about who played for us three years ago and is still here and nothing to do with them working in L1 if we were to be relegated.

How much of a positive impact have our signings made this season.

Not sure that’s fair. We got a CB and LWB in we clearly needed, Sheaf was clearly the way we got the deal over the line. We needed a striker in Jan. As I say only McCallum (and that’s just because we already had Giles, so it was more keeping Giles than getting McCallum) and James.
The one trick we have really missed this season is a winger/AM to give us some options though, and I really think that’s where a loan signing can shine.

Yeah I agree. The failure to get another AM in when Jones and Jobello clearly wasn’t working out is criminal for me, we had Rose coming back at CB and Walker at ST so not sure I’d have got another in on loan.

To be honest anyone with pace would have been welcome. I think even I could beat our centre backs over a sprint

So what are you measuring against to determine if the signings have made a positive impact or not? You can’t compare it to last season because we were in a lower league so you haven’t got the datum point of we achieved X last season in the championship. You can’t compare to established teams in the championship who have been building teams for seasons with much bigger budgets, that would be ridiculous. The only thing we’ve got is gut feeling and my gut feeling is that this season’s team would have trumped last season’s team over the course of a season. In the same league. On that basis the team has improved and transfers (although not the only factor) have played their part in that.

After some dialogue on the forum today, I just want to get an overall perspective about what people think of the recruitment this season.

My own view is that it hasn't really been good enough in a season that is critical for the club going forwards. Of course, there has been a really unfortunate amount of injuries which hasn't helped. There doesn't need to be an argument (although I know there will be), just interested to know other supporter viewpoints.

Players In:

Gustavo Hamer
Bakayoko (extended contract)
Julien Da Costa
Callum O'Hare
Ryan Giles
Fabio Tavares
Leo Östigard
Marcel Hilßner
Matty James
Sam McCallum
Josh Reid
Viktor Gyökeres
Tyler Walker
Ben Sheaf
Lee Camp

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if we had that luxury I think we would only still sign Hamer, O’Hare, Ostigard and maybe Matty James. I say maybe to James because I think he’s too similar to what we already have in Kelly.

As a general observation, I am really surprised that we overlooked pace and speed so much in our recruitment. Most of us knew before a ball was kicked that the Championship is a much faster pace division than League 1 or 2. If you don’t have pace in the Champ, you must be able to read the game and be spot on with positioning and awareness.

Despite this, O’Hare is the only player we signed with any pace. It’s become clear that whilst we already knew they didn’t have any pace, players like McFadzean, Rose and Hyam have proved they do not have the intelligence or ability to compensate at Championship level. Ostigard proves this. He has no pace but reads the game extremely well at this level.

As others have pointed out, having no width or wingers with any pace whatsoever, has limited us to playing 3-5-2 and narrow variations of 4-4-2 which hasn’t helped either.

If we can survive, I really hope we make wholesale changes and sort the lack of pace and width. The whole defence needs to go and start again in my opinion - only exception being Dabo and Ostigard if we could re-sign him.

We’ve done a lot of running to stand still. By the time the season started, only Ostigard and Walker were material improvements on what we had last season, and neither of them are standout players in this league.

Robins is very good at rebuilding on the fly, adapting the team’s strategy and pushing us to the next level in the process, but that usually only happens when he’s forced into it because of injuries etc. When given the freedom to develop a side without any (non-budget) constrictions it was all just a bit....uninspired. Giles and McCallum at LWB again? Sure, why not. Three at the back again? What could possibly go wrong. Players with pace? Well, we didn’t need them last season. Etc etc etc. It all smacked of trying to get the band back together rather than building something different for a different challenge.

I don’t care about the gambles that didn’t work out - I don’t think Hilssner or Dacosta are going to break the bank, just like Kastaneer and Vincenti didn’t in years prior. I’m more concerned with the stubborn refusal to fill holes that have needed to be plugged all season - how have we gone all year without a single left footed CB? Without a single LB on a permanent deal? Without a proper target man, or a player with pace or trickery who can stretch the opposition late on?

We have so many redundant players at CB, CM and up front, it makes me worry what the long-term strategy is, and for all the talk of Badlan having contingency plans for being promoted etc, we look a lot like a team which was taken by surprise in going up. Hence if we stay up, we may need to sign an entirely new back three, plus two new left backs as a necessity, and that’s before we even address one of the most tame front threes in the division.

Don’t get me wrong - the recruitment team has nailed it during the L2 and L1 years. But the Championship might have come a year or so too quickly for them. There are worse problems to have with your team, I suppose.

AN UPDATE FROM DANE MURPHY

Our Chief Executive Officer has spoken with the media today on a number of topics, which we've outlined in brief below!

We can afford the transfer, which he said previously is around our usual type of fee we pay, but now the big boys are circling we’ll be blown out of the water with personal terms. Is the way I read it.

Claiming Baka as a signing

When has someone signing a new contract ever been classed as a signing when assessing a club's recruitment? Talk about moving the goalposts.

Almost as bad as claiming Reid and Tavares are bad signings.

I think its about a 6.5/10. Slightly better than average. The majority think its average. Your opinion only has 33%. What's your point?

Baka is obviously not a new signing but it says something about our personnel department when they've looked at him play like shit for 2 years in L1 and decided that he would be a good use of our budget in the Championship. Biamou we hold less blame for as it was reported he was told he could leave but wanted to stay and fight for a place so in which case there's nothing we could do. We actively made the decision to keep Baka around at a cost to the club and not give him any game time, even when we were down to the bare bones.
