The piss poor recruitment could take a couple of seasons to rectify or even longer. That’s my biggest concern.

When we received 30+?

If we want to progress then we need to spend. Could be on playing staff, support staff or facilities but money in a bank account somewhere is not helping us at all.

Exactly, and I think most would agree the amount we spent is not the issue, it’s the players we spent it on who (currently) aren’t performing.

Our best transfer business has been made buying shrewdly for relatively low fees. We have instead spent what for this club is a monstrous fee on a single striker who looks to be a serious mistake. That money spent on him is now gone and we can't use it elsewhere.

I'd have been happy with 10 million investment in 7-8 full time players and a few quality loans on top. A slightly larger investment than previous years, but nothing that would cause us long term damage.
What would you call quality loans ?
If you loan decent prem players and not kids you would be looking at weekly wages of £50k+ if you try to to buy the same it would be millions in a fee and three/four year contracts on a minimum two/three million a year. It’s a bit of a minefield.

We’ve made a net profit on transfers. Someone who cashes in on two Lamborghinis, replaces them with a fleet of Fiat Puntos and banks the rest of the money isn’t generally considered to be a big spender.

That’s not the same as saying the Puntos are great cars, or that we didn’t overpay for them, or that we shouldn’t generally expect better from the investments we have made. But anyone expressing surprise at how we’ve regressed after selling two of the best assets in the division is kidding themselves.

Nonetheless they did have the luxury of a substantial wedge of cash to spend that ordinarily they wouldn't. It remains a fact that this is an expensively assembled squad hovering above the drop zone.

“Low” fees is relative.

£1m+ for Vik was pretty high for a player with 3 goals in 30 championship appearances.

£1.5m on Hamer was a massive fee for us at the time, biggest for 10-15 years?

For this division they're considered pretty low and if we had £30m+ to spend, even more so.

Oh I totally agree there. I do think people underestimated the difficulty of replacing both Gyokeres and Hamer - once we sold the latter I basically gave up on the playoff campaign that we seemed to be gearing up for. But I’m still disappointed with how things have gone since then.

My point is we’ve not had a policy of keeping spending low, we’ve always spent what we can. And this summer that rapidly increased so if anything our approach has remained the same.

You should get a job at airfix the amount you bang on about models.

See my previous comment. Our model hasn’t changed, we’ve always spent what we can but recently that has increased.

I didn't expect us to find like for like replacements for them, particularly Hamer with his well-timed mid-August departure. But I'd hoped we'd have gone in for more rough diamonds who clearly have something, but a bit of time away from being the finished article. As it is, we have spent very heavily on Wright and that's money we now can't get back.

We need to actually start doing a few character checks on signings as well. Get a few leaders in. I actually can't believe how shit we are considering how much we have spent.

SBT users when they point out a striker with 2 goals in 13 games isn’t worth £8m

But loans are gambles, Binks looks okay, Ayari not so at the moment, I agree with trying to get loans in January but they wouldn’t be cheap and still a gamble.
Villa loaned in Abrahams whose goals won them promotion and look at them now, his wages though were very high, the gamble worked for them.

Liked the look of Binks early on. Think I'd like to see Kitching start every game now.

We dragged the vic and Hamer sales out so we could get more money but it never left us time to recruit properly. It looks like it’s backfired.

it seemed all the focus was on selling him as we hadn’t done anything until he left and that was 2 months after the play off final. We didn’t know what our budget was. Left us 6 weeks to get cracking but everyone knew we had money that’s why the prices for simms Wright and kitchen are laughable. Ayari was a gamble replacment for Hamer and we’ve banked that money. All a mess.

The real problem was assuming that Hamer would stay and having no real plan for him leaving. Then well publicised that we weren’t prepared to cough up enough for O’Brien to come in on loan but apparently were willing to pay Barnsley an arm and a leg for a player who we keep on the bench.
