Next season as well, they won't be leaving unlike the loanees (some might see this as a bad thing!) so we can build on top of it, rather than constant firefighting.

That constant firefighting that saw us go from League 2 to the Championship play off final? Those loans like Walsh, O'Hare, Gyokeres, Sheaf, Doyle and McNally didn't do too badly did they?

And yes I think for some of them it will be a bad thing that they won't be leaving at the end of the year.

No, I'll repeat, the constant firefighting in this division, unlike the signings of Godden, Allen, Kelly etc. Sheaf incidentally was a loan with view to buy so I'll count him as a purchase thankyou very much, and Gyokeres too was bought, that's why we had cash to replace the loanees in defence as opposed to scratching around looking for the next Wilson-Esbrand and Adaramola.

If the manager tasks his recruitment team with bringing in a set of players to play in a certain formation, only for those new players to only start producing results once the manager pivots to a totally different system instead, who (if anyone) should take the blame for that?

Who, other than fans on here, says that has happened?

Well I’m asking fans on here - who else’s opinion should we be canvassing?

I actually feel that things are starting to come to fruition and the new players are starting to gel. MR didn't know his best team to start with but has a much better idea now. His team choice on Saturday didn't work out but in theory he should be able to rest / swap a few players given the improved quality in the squad.

Im asking why make up this specific scenario? Early in the season the moan was we’d signed a winger and don’t need him. All the evidence from Robins is he had a formation with wide forwards in his mind as he wanted another in the summer.

We need some experience and someone to lead the side and higher quality in forward positions.

Experience in what?

I'm not sure any sane owner would sanction spending more on forwards because of a belief (rather than conclusive evidence) that the signings made 5 months ago don't have sufficient quality

It's not a made-up scenario - we signed a load of players (Sakamoto the wing-back included) to play in a possession-based 3ATB system. The results were middling and now we've moved to a 4-3-3 counterattacking style which seems to provide better returns, but has created a surplus of players in some positions (CB) and big gaps in others (LW/RW). Or are you saying that was the plan all along?

I think your initial assumption is completely false so not worth answering the rest of it.

Im saying Robins has always liked 433/4231 and was looking for players who could play it.

The plan was probably to phase Fadz out over a slightly longer period, but otherwise I don’t see the issues you state. We have 4CBs, and a variety of players who can play wide forward (O’Hare, Palmer, Simms, Wright, Sakamoto) but could probably do with one or two more (as Robins said in the summer).

This is entirely a fan made narrative.

I don't really agree - Robins himself said at the fan forum that we have a load of CBs (five, not four) because he wanted to play 3ATB. Only one of the five players you mentioned as winger options has any real track record of playing a full season there, and you've been swearing blind all year that he's actually a wing-back anyway.

I don’t entirely buy this line but equally we were linked with that Noam Emeran in the summer and no one understood why.

Definitely looks like we recruited for 5-3-2 in the summer & Robins said as much at the fans forum.

However, we definitely recruited for 4-3-3 in the League 1 promotion season. Changing formation mid-season to better suit our players isn't a bad thing and shouldn't be used as a negative.

Whilst I don’t disagree that we mainly recruited for 5 at the back, Robins did also say he was looking for a wide forward in the summer so he was obviously very open to the idea or the flexibility of being able to play different formations.

At least one double-barrelled name is obligatory these days, so that lineup should be Faggots, Chips and Mushy-Peas.

One of the big upgrades is having our own players. Norton-Cuffy, Wilson-Esbrand, McNally, Doyle, Panzo. Some good quality but your always rebuilding when you have a lot of loans.

Agreed, more generally we’ve focused our attention on players who are versatile which has allowed us to re-jig the shape and personnel when the 3-4-1-2 wasn’t working.

We do need wingers, but I think a front 3 of Wright, Simms & Sakamoto could be quite potent.

I think we’ll get a left wide forward and a CM like Robins wanted in the summer. But we’ve got a few players who can stand in at wide forward if needed.

Left sided forward seems to be Wright's place now. Are we replacing him or just providing competition?

I’d personally keep him out wide. He’s looked really lively out wide and aside from his wank finishing has been doing well. Could maybe do with a backup winger though as all we really have is Tatsu.
