At the weekend we were just 1 point off the automatic promotion places.

If we had won today we WOULD have been 3rd, but here we are, in 7th and clinging on to that last play off place.

Massive loss today.

A win and it would have been

1. Luton 51 pts
2. Notts County 47 pts
3. CITY 41 pts
4. Lincoln 40 pts
5 Wycombe 40 pts
6. Colchester 39 pts
7. Exeter 39 pts.

We of course lost though, so:

1. Luton 51
2. Notts County 47
3. Lincoln 40
4. Wycombe 40
5. Colchester 39
6. Exeter 39
7. CITY 38

Still eminently rectifiable, but just think how buzzing we would have been with that first scenario. Confidence sky high and real belief and an automatic promotion place and still just 6 points behind Notts County.

I think I said this to you Otis about losing today in the 'happy thread' and again correct, the league is very tight, we are away again Saturday so it has to be ' a must win ' else that happy thread looks even more ridiculous and premature as it was. I have learned supporting the club to be realistic , we have lost ground and the pack will form and pull away , we have to be in that pack or we have to wait another season to see. This is the easiest league to get out of in promotion terms so we should really be moving on. Yes it can be rectified to a certain extent but we cannot afford carrying on like this, it will cascade to we can make the Playoffs then we are safe etc etc its poor as we are a poor team filled with only a couple of decent players.

I can't believe we're still 7th. Feels like we've either lost or drawn most weeks.

Probably down to the fact we haven't really played well all season.

But still only two points of third place going into January? It's hardly over is it?

Who has said it is?

I am merely pointing out the difference today between us winning and losing I'm terms of the table and the fact that we can't keep doing this.

Two wins on the bounce at home, two defeats on the bounce away.

"Massive" "devastating" it's not like there are just two games left though is it?

On reflection there isn't anything really amazing about this league. We deserve to be where we are in the table. We blow hot and cold and that reflects our position.

Robins really needs to get a few things right this transfer window to ensure we make a play off place. Also tactically he needs to make son earlier decision making in games to turn things around. Remember Mowbray used to have a plan A but not B.

Deep down I don't think we are capable of getting an automatic spot based on performances, injured players and form right now.

Make some key signings to push us on and consistency might come.

Hence I said DAY, a devastating day. Not talking about the season or the rest of the campaign to come, I was talking about today.

Thought that was pretty clear right there in the title.

And I said 'massive' because there is a big difference between being in 3rd, IN an automatic promotion place and being in 7th, just in the play off places.

I did also mention I was deliberately being CT headline about it too.

If Accrington & Mansfield had won we would have been 9th at the end of the day!

Shows how sometimes just a single win or defeat can change things drastically.

(Is it okay for me to use 'drastically?)

Not sure it is. It reinforces that long-held belief, born out of bitter experience, that whenever we're on the cusp of something really exciting, we fuck it up big style. We're not consistent enough for an auto spot, and the play-offs will be a real scrap. Unless MR invests wisely next month. PUSB.

A look at the table shows we are 4 points away from 3rd place but also 4 away from mid table mediocrity I think the next game is crucial if we lose that we are drawn into the middle of the pack and then I think fans will start to turn against Mark Robins . They have had too many seasons of failure.

But certain posters were saying that we have a great team........except when we lose of course and then it's the managers fault every time ??!! I wonder who the scumbags will cash in next month then ?

Yeah, might be dramatic, but I felt devastated too.

Really buggered up my Boxing Day. I was in the car with my daughter and was happily enjoying the day and listening to the match commentary, but the moment Port Vale scored I sensed we would lose and immediately switched off the radio.

Changed my mood in an instant. That'll teach me for being cocky and thinking we were building something and on to something big won't it.

Was convinced we would pick at least a point up yesterday.

Really believed this season would be different, Dave.

I think if we take another dive this season and slump into mediocrity it will totally break my spirit.

I keep saying that at some point we will surely find a level we can really compete at and I have been convinced this season is it.

We fade away now after being top 6 just about all of the season and it will be déjà vu ......all over again. Really couldn't stomach it.

I expect us to bounce back on Saturday mind. We HAVE to.

That's in a nutshell, isn't it? After a couple of good results you'd think confidence would be high and they'd be up for beating a team in the bottom half, and then they go and play like that. That's why I had no qualms about joining the Checkatrade Sky Blue bandwagon at Wembley - for once in my lifetime (apart from the glorious exception of 1987) we didn't revert to type and swept all before us. Fantastic day. I don't get the same feeling in this league campaign. Hope I'm wrong. Hope you're all enjoying yourselves, despite the football!

What I don't get is that in the last two games we were scoring goals and creating chances and looked very good coming forwards. Yesterday we barely created any chances at all by all accounts.

MR is to over cautious if you ask me we will not get a consistent run going whilst he worries about who and how they are setup

What a bloody nonsense this is. We lost against Port Vale... Friday we beat Wycombe... We are in the play off spots, and around the final automatic spot. Where we have been all season. It wasn't a devastating day in our fortunes, nor is the next game crucial for our season.

We could have been 3rd, but ended up 7th.

I would say that is a very bad day.

I'm with you on this. I expect us to beat Chesterfield in our next home game, and quite possibly lose at Carlisle on Saturday. We may well be just outside the play off places as a result. However, we will also then have new players available. Should not be in too bad a position providing the January dealings are effective.

Again, Harry, I am talking about one day, yesterday. The thread was about yesterday and where we could have been and where we ended up, not what is going to happen in the future.

I suppose it depends somewhat on whether you started the season expecting promotion or thought we might have a chance of it.

Expected promotion for me and Mark Robins has come out and categorically said we are the best team in this division.

If he truly believes that we are under achieving and badly. We are 13 points behind Luton.
