Jeans with a shirt and tie is never acceptable in any situation.
At least ditch the tie.

Only if you want to look like you pissed your only pair of good trousers, and jeans was all you had left.

Get rid of the tie and replace suit jacket with a sports/tweed one

Think you'll get away with that at the reception but not if it's the ceremony as well.

Slightly different question - are smart trousers, smart shirt (no tie) acceptable for a Christening? Plus the fuckers have put the post gathering on during the game

Yes.
Is it acceptable to duck out of gathering to watch game? Definitely.

All of this talk on trousers and nobody has advised the OP to wear chinos to the wedding. Wear a salmon pink pair of them along with a tweed jacket, and buttoned shirt minus tie.

If you get thrown out it’s them, not you.

Would be better with chinos, smart white t-shirt and suit jacket - no need for a tie.

No wardrobe concerns for this scenario. Simply send £50 in a card and advise that you unfortunately can't make it.
